Editorial Review for The Park – by Dan McAlvanah

The Scene
An outing to this ski lodge-sized hot spot, with one of the city's most expansive and popular outdoor patios, feels more like a night spent at a fashion show than dinner at a restaurant--and not just because of the celebrity sightings. There's a loose anything-goes element to the style: A 30-foot tree plucked from tropical climes sits in the middle of the dining room, amethyst geodes rest behind glass near the bathrooms and the maitre d' likes to sport red-laced sneakers with his suit.

The Food
Surprisingly, the food takes a more conservative tack. The kitchen steers a tight course between risk and reward, scoring a lot of obvious successes--tagliatelle with pancetta and English peas, suckling pig with tomatoes and orzo, chicken and andouille sausage gumbo. Desserts include a warm apple crisp and can't-miss banana beignets.

So we decided to get some dessert and happened to pass by. We've seen it before but never ventured in yet, so we figured we'd give it a try. We asked and were seated outside and as we ordered, a THING (can't say the which 4 legged scavenger m-word as it's prohibited by citysearch) decided to run a few feet behind us. OK, it's outside(ish) in a park environment so a THING, while not the best thing to see, is understandable, if not. It kept running down and left us (and our dessert) alone, so we hurried up a bit (one of our party isn't exactly fond of them, putting it lightly). Next, a bunch of waterbugs (that's what the waiter called them) crawled by and flew at us and our food. If you don't know what they are, they are 2 inch long, ugly as sin and fly. We quickly got up and moved our seats (and food) to another table away from any tree or dirt or nature in general. As we finished up, yet another THING ran by us and into the restaurant itself. We notified the waiter and he was quite sorry for the experience. As for me and my friends, we understood that when you basically have an indoor (and very pretty) park, you're bound to have some uninvited guests. Still, it wasn't an enjoyable. Desserts were pretty good, my favorite being the banana wontons. The crisp of the day (peach in our case) was very good as well. Creme brulee is good but standard. when is it ever bad if done correctly? I would go back if only for drinks on the insistence of others. I'm not going to eat any food when I know what's running and flying around.

Pros: very nice indoor outdoor environment

Cons: don't eat outside

Wow, what a great place to eat and party on a Saturday night! We sat in the garden with a great ambiance & style. The restaurant is very well decorated and not too overwhelming. The food was fantastic. Our table ordered the salmon, tun, and penne pastas in which all were delicious! Our server was great, very attentive and on top of everything. The calamari & steamed mussels were fantastic: filled with flavour!! Pricing for the meals were very reasonable & appropriate. The portions were just right. At midnight the penthouse opens up & turns into a club. The music is the penthouse is more club/dance, whereas in he atrium, garden & main room the music was mostly hip hop/club/pop. I honestly did not hear one bad song! Service at the bar was very fast, and waitresses are aware of everyone sitting in the booths. Overall, this was a fantastic place to eat in NYC. If you want to enjoy a great meal, have fun on the dance floor or sit and chat with friends over a few drinks go to the Park! I have been recommeding this place to everyone and I will definitely be returning next time i'm in the city! :)

Pros: Food, drinks, ambience, location, very spacious, service, decor

Cons: washrooms can be messy
