Editorial Review for Levee Bike Path – by Cristina Diettinger

The Scene
New Orleans' levees are the only things in the way of hills we have in these parts, so it's thrilling to ride up on this elevated track and peer down at the city in its bowl-like setting as the Mighty Mississippi rolls away toward the Gulf of Mexico.

The Attractions
Although the path was created with bikers in mind, it's a two-lane paved mini-road about 5 feet wide where joggers, inline skaters and dog walkers also abound. Small children ride in wagons, infants in strollers. The pavement is well-maintained for a smooth ride, and bikers appreciate the occasional dips and turns that make for a more interesting trip. The length of the path can accommodate any level of fitness--it actually follows the river all the way to the Baton Rouge area, more than 80 miles away.

Insider Tips

Bladers Beware

Sometimes river gravel gets onto the path, a real danger to high-speed skaters, who can be sent tumbling by a single ill-placed stone.

Canine Club

The bike path begins near the "dog park," an area of the levee where dogs and their owners traditionally convene in the early evenings to exercise, meet and greet.
