Editorial Review for Remote Lounge--CLOSED – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
Guests waive their right to privacy upon entering this surveilled bar--so states a sign disquieting for some and titillating for others. 120 scattered TV monitors broadcast up-close views from 60 strategically placed cameras. The 1950s sci-fi-style personal screens at every table allow the attractive, sexually diverse patrons to spy by changing channels, scanning faces and bodies with joysticks, picking up intra-bar calls and taking pictures that later appear on the bar's website.

When you see it from outside you don't think of much, just wait until you go in. Its quite a surprise. Besides the fact that sometimes they have happy hour (good drinks) the place is cozy, crazy and fun. You do have cameras everywhere of course except the bathroom. There are two floors. I like the one downstairs better. they have a dance floor plus they have a big screen where they will be showing you on. Whats fun about this place is that anyone who wishes to take a picture of you, can, and it will be posted on their website. You'll be surprised at the things you see. Also great for singles since if you a cutie by browsing the channels, you have a phone handy to call them :) On weekends, be ready to wait long lines.

Contempt happens once a month at this club. The cameras are taken over by a VJ. The crowd and vibe is goth/punk/alternative. Music is ecclectic. Good times may be had by all! Hope to see you Sept 16! For more info visit contemptny org

Pros: Only on alt night

Cons: crowded

Editor's Review

First it was a novelty bar with a surveillance fetish; then the novelty wore off. The space has been reopened as a new bar called Bowery Electric.  See the full editorial review.
