Editorial Review for Essential Therapy – by Sandra Ramani
The Scene
Owned by Carlos Araque, whose credits include a stint as offical massage therapist to the Mets, Essential Therapy is housed in quiet quarters at the back of a Flatiron-area office building. The warm waiting lounge, three dimly lit treatment rooms and sleek bathroom (with shower) are surprisingly spacious; the pervasive scent of essential oils relaxes clients instantly.
The Services
Expert in a number of massage styles--including Swedish, deep tissue, medical, craniosacral, shiatsu, hot stone and prenatal--Essential's staff of therapists tailor each session to a client's immediate needs, working towards pain relief and prevention. For chronic lower back pain, for example, Araque may incorporate stretching and pressure-point work; with a number of dancer and athlete clients, he's also a great resource for at-home techniques and tips on incorporating massage into fitness programs.

So this was my first time ever getting a massage and I decided to go with my boyfriend. We were scheduled for a couples massage which is 60 mins long and the use of the jacuzzi and sauna is included. You walk in and you are asked to fill out a form. Then lead to the lockers which are downstairs. It smells really good because of the scented candles. Which also function to give the room a warm dim light. So the lockers are really cramped together and people really aren't shy. They just whip off all their clothes and walk around with no clothes on... Then we get back into the waiting area and within 5 mins our masseuses greet us and lead us into our room. We disrobe and are given out massages. He said his was wonderful. His masseuse was Angela. Mine wasn't that great. There were times that the pressure was too much and I had to bite my lip from saying ouch. But after enduring it for a while I did tell her to relieve the pressure a bit. It was better from there on. But now my neck hurts and I realize I shouldve told her to not put too much pressure from th ebeginning. But like I mentioned before it was my first time at a spa and now i know. Overall I had a great experience. The sauna was about 5 ft x 5ft...and the jacuzzi fits 5 people at a time. Although since I had an early appointment there wasnt anyone in the sauna or jacuzzi...
Pros: Beautiful ambience
Cons: i hated their towels..i had pink fluffs all over me aftewards

The staff is understanding, knowledgeable and attentive. The ambience is relaxing and sophisticated without being overboard, and has all the steam and showers you need.. i will continue to come back with no doubt that i am getting my money's worth!
