Steve Tyrell Editorial Review
The Skinny
In the early 1960s, Steve Tyrell used to call on DJs on behalf of artists like Dionne Warwick, singing the praises of new singles in order to get them on the air. Nowadays, Tyrell is himself a singer, though he's hardly
a household name, unless your household has a copy of the movie "Father of the Bride" or the soundtrack. Tyrell's specialty is classic standard tunes (his new disc, "Standard Time," includes such chestnuts as "It Had To Be You," and "As Time Goes By") that are part Gotham glitz and part Southern funk. The funky side is mostly attributable to Tyrell's formative years in Houston's predominantly black Fifth Ward, where he soaked up the soulful work of such giants as Ray Charles and Bobby "Blue" Bland. As for the glitz, it comes from the arrangements of top-drawer jazz and studio pros that provide sterling accompaniment on "Standard Time."
The Crowd
If you're a fan of Tony Bennett, or even Harry Connick, Tyrell should be your flute of champagne.
