Editorial Review for Moda--Modern Italian – by Steven Shaw
The Scene
A neatly pressed, cultured clientele tarries in stylish environs (Moda is Italian for "fashion") at this refreshing eatery in midtown's Flatotel. The Milan-esque decor includes granite aplenty and dark walnut tables with inlaid lighting. Well-drilled, professional service is the norm.
The Food
The contemporary Italian fare can hardly contain its exuberance. Moda's complimentary hors d'oeuvres tray--lemon-cured olives, white beans, Parmigiano Reggiano chunks, butter whipped with olive oil and addictive bread--is one of the classiest in town. Other standouts: artichokes braised, baked and fried in a salad; a colossal seared Maine lobster engulfed in cherry tomato-tarragon ragu; and the super-generous rack of lamb served on a bed of braised leg mixed with white beans.

Moda is an unforgettable experience, but not exactly for reasons you would like to remember. First, there is the horde of flies running rampant over the dining tables. When you walk in, you might just think it’s the occasional errant fly that every restaurant must suffer from time to time. Trust me, that notion will end quite quickly when you start wildly waving your napkin in mid-air desperately hoping that it will keep Moda’s insect blitzkrieg at bay. Eventually though, your desire to resist, like your appetite, will fade into a sickly feeling of queasiness, which is then overtaken by a desire to abandon Moda for the sake of being anywhere else. However, should you unfortunately order and receive your food before being overwhelmed by flying vermin, you will find Moda’s food ranging from mediocre to downright terrible. For instance, the wild mushroom soup is bland, watery and monotonous. Just think of shitake mushrooms with hot water thrown into a blender and you’ve caught the essence of that dish. The pasta, by comparison, was simply uninspiring and nothing beyond what you could buy in most Midtown delicatessens. Given the number of good or even fair restaurants in Midtown to choose from, Moda is a place to AVOID AT ALL COSTS, unless, of course, you actually prefer a fly in your soup.
Pros: Flies. Lots of 'em.
Cons: Extremely unclean. Mediocre to bad food. Occasionally slow service.

Great restaurant. Elegant atmosphere and nice wait staff. Served bread, cheese & olives when we were seated. Ordered a ceasar salad to share and I had sea bass and hubby had veal chop - all was very tasty. We ordered capachinos and didnt want dessert but they brought over a tray with cookies and strawberries. Definately would return -they did have a prix fix menu for $35.00 that included salad, main and dessert.
Pros: great service and food, warm atmosphere
