Editorial Review for Blue Fin – by Dan McAlvanah
The Scene
Sophisticated dining isn't what Times Square is known for, but this cavernous, beautifully designed restaurant, which occupies two floors of the W Hotel, is just that. A school of Brancusi-like minnows overhead and a huge glass facade that overlooks Broadway's TKTS booth keep the eye entertained. Service is professional, if occasionally overbearing.
The Food
Extensive raw bar and sushi selections supplement the New American seafood menu. The kitchen is strongest in straightforward preparations, like a meaty crab cake with tomato aioli and a clam and lobster chowder with truffle-laced croutons. In other places, a surplus of ingredients creates dissonant results, like cumin-dusted tuna over squash, baby broccoli and fingerling potatoes or an otherwise excellent salmon with a parsnip puree, lentils, mushrooms and pesto. Desserts deserve notice, especially the apple cider cake and sour-cherry almond cake.

I went here last night with my friend for Summer Restaurant Week. Ironically I did not order from the Restaurant Week menu as there was nothing interesting to choose from. So I ordered the tuna crusted with sesame seeds, cooked medium rare. The tuna itself was delicious, prepared just the way I like it, however I was dispointed with so little sides (came with white rice and vegetables). Interesting enough this place does have one of the freshest seafood I've ever had. (I also ordered the spicy tuna roll, very yummy). The ambiance was great too although it's a tourist's spot since it's in Times Square, so the noise was loud. I recommend going there later than 8pm to avoid the broadway show crowd.
Pros: Ambience, Service, Fresh Seafood
Cons: Crowded, Avoid the Restaurant Week Menu

We ducked in to Blue Fin when it started sleeting after being dragged to Grease! The all glass bar on the street level was packed but the host told us there was seating on the second level. After making our way up a gorgeous wide stairway we found our new favorite Times Square bar! There was a jazz duo in the corner and a great wine selection to help warm us up. Then we found out the full dinner menu was available at the bar and my wife had a bowl of great clam chowder and I had a crab cake that was a little small but perfectly tender and not too greasy. We were so happy to have found the place that we had another glass of wine and stayed until the band packed up and went home. I never have high hopes in Times Square but this was one of those memorable nights when you stumble upon something that is just perfect. I wonder how much longer until word gets out and the upstairs bar is as crowded as the downstairs.
Pros: Warm atmosphere, great wines
Cons: a little pricey, but on par with the neighborhood
