What People Are Saying About Equinox

The Scene – With its ultraclean, minimalist decor and a top-notch staff, Equinox raises the bar for chain health clubs. At consistently spacious facilities, the design team continually maximizes natural light and highlights organic architectural quirks. Equipment from industry standards like Cybex and Hammerstrength are paired with high-end machinery--including one specifically designed for the company by Life Fitness. Even the piped-in music (which varies from room to room) has been thoughtfully programmed. – – The Workout – The in-house personal-training…

Gay indian lifeguard fondles member friend at pool
by siowyune
Have been going to this gym for 7 years, always pleased with hygiene... until I had to permanently relocate to the Greenwich Avenue loacation...saturday morning, 9am, decided to go for a swim...only to be confronted with Equinox employee giving a member friend some "job" under a towel on the bench by the pool. I thought it was really disrespectful. Equinox could do more about how it manages its employees...
- Pros: Eyesore
- Cons: Disrespectful to other members
they hire people who are dumb as rocks
by bleedinghearts
i have been going to equinox since 2004. i like the teachers and the classes i take. my issue with equinox is the staff. the people at the front desk could not be bothered most of the time to be polite or smile. they sound uneducated. it's obvious they are untrained in customer service and how to address members. actually, what is sad is that these people do not know how to talk to people in general-is that how they talk to their friends and family? seems like they have no manners to begin with. this goes for the managers too-they tried to console me about a messed-up double-booked spin bike situation with a massage . the manger handled the situation horribly and i ended up leaving the class. after i complained, he gave me a complimentary massage. i was enraged when i went to get it and it was horrible-every other time i have gotten a deep tissue massage, there is deep pressure and i come out feeling different than how i went in. the masseuse i had, caroline with red hair, had long nails that dug into me and even when i told her i like deeper pressure, she said 'good to know' and didn't change anything. this was the last insult to all the complaints i have about this place. i think equinox needs to have training sessions on customer service-how to address customers, be professional, sound educated and not stupid, and know how to deal with mess-ups. i don't know anyone in life that deals with things the way these people deal with all situations. i guess there's a reason why people work the front desk or are managers at a fitness club and nothing more.
- Pros: great instructors and classes
- Cons: customer service, managers, front desk people
Equinox initiation fee
by hdo202
Some of the people in here wouldn't even know the difference if someone stole $500 from their bank account. If that's you, by all means pay the full initiation fee. But I've been a member of the Equinox at 59th and Lex. It was very nice - but I don't think it was worth paying $500 upfront and $130 per month, considering the I can pay $77 per month at the NYSC on Mercer Street downtown, with no initiation fee. Equinox is unquestionably a nicer gym, but not so much better to justify the cost differential. My concern is the quality, maintennance and variety of exercise equipment, and the size of the space. I get free towels too.
- Pros: great equipment, clean
- Cons: $$$
Great Place!
by RyanJames09
I disagree with the negative comments. I know alot of people who love Equinox. There's a reason why many celebrities work out there. They have so many different locations, and each one is unique. The staff is perky and super friendly. I've never met managers who would work out with you or care about what's going on in your life. I've been a member at other gyms like NYSC and David Barton's...none of them compare!
- Pros: positive atmosphere, great staff, celebrity status clubs, immaculate facilities
- Cons: more expensive than competitors (but u get what you pay for)
BUYER BEWARE - OVERSOLD AND OVERCROWDED - READ FINE PRINT - NO CANCELLATION
by ywwan
Yes, there are many locations and MOST of the gyms in general are in decent condition. However, they have become a victim of their own success. I have a bicoastal membership but the two most convenient locations for me are Soho and 59th and Lex. Unless you don't work normal hours like most people in the city, you will find that they have oversold memberships and the gyms are very, very crowded between 5:30pm and 8pm weekdays and most weekend mornings. I don't have a flexible work schedule and have found every session during these high traffic hours incredibly frustrating. You wait and you wait and you wait for the machines, its tough to get a decent workout - they gym is almost always 90% occupied. I have tried out other less convenient locations and still the same problem. Be sure to read the fine print, even though they are unable due to overcapacity to provide the service they have contracted to provide, they won't let you cancel your membership before one year is up!!! And my concerns just fell on deaf ears regarding overcapacity - their attitude is try to come during a less busy time! Like I don't work for a living! There are better gyms - I strongly recommend the LA Sports Club.
- Pros: Lots of locations, generally well maintained
- Cons: Overcrowded.
