Back when the Bowery was still synonymous with bums and drunks, this proletarian poetry society rang out with true bohemian rage and joy. The young and idealistic still have a place there.
WANNA SEE PURE TALENT? GO HERE!. INCREDIBLE PLACE! I DISAGREE WITH THE IDIOT WHO LEFT ONLY ONE STAR. POOR GUY DOESN'T KNOW WHAT REAL PURE AND TRUE TALENT IS. GREAT POETS AND AMAZING SETTING. CHEAP AND CHILLED OUT. A LOT OF URBAN WORD POETS GO HERE, KOYLAN IS AMAZING! SAW HER PERFORM ONCE WITH QUEENS BOROUGH COLLEGE! A POWERFUL SPOKEN WORD PERFORMER! LEAVES YOU WALKING AWAY WITH CHILLS!! YOU GO GIRL!!!
It's Fine. Wrote a really shitty review of this place a couple years ago. If you're going to see poetry or something, I guess it's cool, but I'm a music person and it's just not that great for it. There are better places to see a band.
A great Place!!!!!!!. The people involved with the Bowery Poetry Club are a true blessing to the city. They provide a great place for artist to express themselves. My Homie, the young star Koylan Gomez lets out fire in there. great place, nice people, clean...
This literary joint assures the word a place in the new millennium..
The Lowdown
Conceived by literary Willie Wonka Bob Holman, the Bowery Poetry Club is home to five-time National Slam champs Urbana. Nearly every hour something artistic is happening. In between events, mingle with the likes of Eric Bogosian, Sekou Sundiata, Sapphire and Hal Sirowitz in the consignment bookshop.
The Layout
After the bookstore cafe, hit the sandwich bar where an imaginative menu offers wasabi egg salad sandwiches, portobello-chutney wraps and Orange Crush in little bottles. Next comes the crows nest for theater techies and a more serious bar serving drinks like Leaves of Grasshopper, Gertrude Wine and Frank O'Hara's Balls. Walk further and you'll find the performance space. Everything from poetry and theater to bands and performance art is unleashed under the distinguished electric red-and-blue gaze of Walt Whitman.
This is the place!. Look, I've been to a lot of clubs, but there is NOTHING like the Bowery Poetry Club. The place is cool. The staff is wonderful. There's great coffee and salads and sandwiches. A full bar. And the poetry vibe is an amazing thing -- it means open and smart, but there's music and theater too. PLEASE check this place out. It's what makes New York New!
