Editorial Review for Coda – by Julie Mehta
The Scene
With its bouncer, velvet ropes and eye-catching space, Coda injects a jolt of swank into the bustling business district around the Empire State Building. Converted from a bank, the sprawling, high-ceilinged lounge has an opulent Las Vegas patina with plush couches, red candles, palm trees and gold spiderweb-like chandeliers. A diverse, cubicle-weary crowd spreads out at the long bar and in the refurbished vault downstairs, enjoying the friendly waitresses' accommodating pace.
The Draw
Nightly rock and jazz bands are the surprising main event and help to break up the corporate vibe. Wines, champagnes and specialty drinks--including the Atomic Punch and Sin City, with gin and vermouth--accompany upscale bar snacks like sushi and fondue.

I flew in to NYC to see a favorite band at Coda. The menu looked good and we planned on having dinner. They didn't have any hours or a phone # posted on the door, so I looked them up in the phone book to call about hours but no one answered the phone. Once I got there, I had to wait in line for tickets even though I was on the guest list. An employee near the door said they were serving food, but the tables had all been removed. She said we could eat at the bar, but there were only 6 chairs at the bar, and were already filled. It took a very long time just to ask the bartender for a menu. By the time I got her attention to order some food, she told me they "decided not to open the kitchen today". She could have told me that in the first place, rather than giving me a menu. Bar service was terrible, everything took a very long time, and my drink was awful. No one behind the bar knew how to make it and I saw them shrug at each other while pouring it. If you don't know how to make a drink, why not ask the person who ordered it? The sound during the concert was fine. It was very crowded, but I expected that. I did not expect to have staff members continuously bumping into me without saying sorry or excuse me, all night long.
Pros: nice looking place
Cons: terrible service
