Mmmmm ... homemade gnocchi. It's light as air. I also love the fennel and arugula salad. FYI, the place is cash only. Love the bohemian/neighborhoody vibe and the outside seating on summer evenings.

Do not get the calamari!. I went there a couple of days ago with a friend for a late lunch. We ordered calamari as a starter. From the menu, we assumed it'd be normal fried calamari, but when it arrived, it wasn't what we had expected. It wasn't covered in batter at all and had a green pesto-looking sauce over it. We thought we'd try it anyway. Both of us found it to taste really fishy despite the sauce covering it up. I had around 2 pieces and then my stomach started to hurt as well. We complained about it to the waiter and asked them to exchange the plate for dessert or something, but the waiter said that we had eaten too much of it! We had both eaten two pieces each. He then had the audacity to ask whether we'd like it wrapped up in a box to go!

New ownership, recently gone very downhill.. Until very recently, I loved this place. The food and wine were wonderful and the service was friendly.

However, since the start of new ownership in March, Max Soha has quickly gone downhill. The service is UTTERLY incompetent. It took the hostess an hour to figure out how to seat our party, when it should have taken 15 minutes. Our entrees were all brought out randomly and at different times. And most importantly, the food is nothing like it used to be. I'd always loved their lasagna, but it's turned into something that tasted like hamburger helper.

It's sad that something that was so good has lost all of its appeal, but I guess that frequently happens with new ownership.

Best Overall!!. Max Soha is my all time favorite restaurant. I went on my first date there five years ago and haven't stopped going there. They are most famously known for their incredible home made pasta lasagna, but there simple tomato sauce is what makes this place so special. The tomatoes they use are incredibly fresh, as well as their bruschetta. I have to say, I have tried almost everything on the menu once, including their amazingly fruity sangria to their scrumptious desserts! I have even asked them to cater my wedding one day!!! :o)

I have been a huge supporter and local promoter of this restaurant to friends and family and continue to go here ona regular basis. Anyone who writes a negative review on them can't appreciate really good italian food!

Lamb Ragu!. I've enjoyed every meal that I've had at Max Soha, but the spaghetti with lamb ragu is definitely the best. Although summertime is best when you can sit outside, Max Soha is consistently delicious and staff are always friendly. It's pretty far uptown, but considering that the prices are unbelievably affordable, you can splurge on a cab!

Lack of service overshadows fairly decent food. There are plenty of other cramped, drafty Italian eateries that you can go to to be ignored by your wait person and you don't have to go all the way to the 120's on Amsterdam. However, if you really don't want to pay much for your fairly decent Italian, I guess you'll just have to endure the charmless staff and elbow bumping.

Really Good Lamb Ragu. If you go to Max Soha, definitely order the lamb ragu with spaghetti ($9.95). It is by far their best dish. All the other dishes are either decent or misses, but trust me, it is worth it to go to Max Soha just for this dish. I love the ambiance and the staff is great as well. And they must be doing something right...Columbia students and professors go there frequently. Friday nights have a long wait, but you won't be disappointed

Every dish was worse than the last. Went to Max Soha last night with a bunch of friends to celebrate a birthday. Most dishes we tried were near flavorless and the pasta dishes were extremely chewy. The bread pudding was as hard as a rock and also lacking flavor. On a positive note, the service was adequate. Oh, and the large "cash only" signs definitely provided a certain ambiance - and a reminder that there was no way you could challenge the credit card charge for the awful food.

Best Gnochhi Around!. This is my favorite restaurant in the area, by far. The waiters are wonderful and even take the time to get to know you. Everything on the menu is wonderful. My only problem is that the gnocchi is so good, I can't seem to order anything else! The bread and dipping sauce they provide is amazing. A must if you are in the area.

Best restaurant in Morningside Heights. One of my favorites in the area -- fantastic Italian food that's not expensive at all. It's dimly lit, and would be really romantic (if it wasn't so crowded). In the summer, you can ask to be seated outside, and even if it there's no particular view, it's tons of fun. The waiters and waitresses are always attentive. Personal favorite: the gnocchi.

The only downside is the wait: expect to spend at least 20 minutes in line!
