Editorial Review for Steamboat Ski Resort – by Seth Masia

The Scene
Steamboat Springs bills itself as "Ski Town USA," because Norwegian champion Carl Howelsen settled here in 1917 and talked the town into building what was then the world's largest ski jump.

The Slopes

Mount Werner's great rounded shoulders seem designed for easy cruising and for the most part, that's how skiers use this huge, friendly honey-bear of a mountain. Experts know it's also a tremendous place to play in the woods, especially in the aspen glades. The timberline is high (higher than the summit), and the firs and aspen are perfectly spaced to create the finest tree skiing in the Rockies. The half-dozen classic, fall-line bump runs draw a rowdy crowd of youngsters.

Steamboat is a beautiful place. I've never seen so much powder! I was there in January of 06. There was over 300 inches of snow. Powder everyday! Did I say they have powder? I will be back.

This resort as some of the lighest snow I have skiied on. I have been to most Colorado resorts plus Jackson Hole and Park City and this is the best snow. The Apre ski scene is great also. There is a bar right at the base of the mountain called Bear River and they have great live music daily. I think the musicians name when I was there was Shawn Allen plus some other guys. On top of all this the downtown scene had great food and more live music at night.

Pros: Parking, Free buses, easy to navigate

Better snow earlier in the season gives this North Park Range resort an edge over more southern mountains.  See the full editorial review.
