Save your time and money.
This place is on a downhill spiral. Started off excellent, got on their high horse and forgot that customers keep a business open, and are now plagued with evil waitstaff and dangerously cold food! Yet, us loyal patrons insist on giving them out business and our generous tips. Do yourself a favor and dine elsewhere. Your stomach and nerves will thank you for it!
The worst service and really pathetic food. I am not a fussy eater at all but the omelets and pasta are probably one of the worst I've eaten in 32 years. The staff was not forth coming at all and didn't even apologize on being told about the food and finding an egg shell in one of the omelets. Seriously, they would not survive in manhattan for even a day. Whether it's the lack of options or whatever else it is in jersey city, I still wouldn't go there again. Waste of time, money and energy.
LIED TO MY FACE!!!!! – I have been going to this restaurant for years atleast a few times a week...until today. I have been lied to by the manager (strawberry blonde hair), by the staff, been treated rudely, and have waited for my food for almost an hour! All of these things on seperate occasions. But it seems as if every time I go in I deal with the same things..The owner really needs to pick his staff better. It is INEXCUSABLE to EVER LIE to a patron. EVER! I would LOOOOVVVEEE to tell the owner, but can't find any info to contact the owner. Anybody know who the owner is? Or how I might be able to contact him/her??? I've heard other complaints from some of my other friends who have been going there for years and now also refuse to give that restaurant their money.
Possibly Some of the Worst Service Ever – I have been to Marco & Pepe twice for brunch and have had the same miserable experience both times.
I have a laundry list of complaints, so I will just list them here: You wait about 20 minutes to order (even if there is no one else in the place), you wait about an hour for your food, if you want a refill on your water or coffee - you have to ask (the waiters apparently do not have the foresight to offer such things), if you need a utensil that they forgot to give you - you have to ask, if you need milk, sugar, syrup, any sort of condiment - you have to ask (are you noticing a trend here? The wait staff does not wait on you, you wait on them.).
The food is mediocre at best. The potatoes you get at brunch could quite possibly be one of smallest portions ever, not to mention they get served to you practically floating in oil. I ordered a salad and asked for no cheese. When the salad came out it had no cheese, and no dressing. When I asked the waitress for dressing (because of course I had to ask, she wouldn't notice and undressed salad that she is serving), she said to me, "Oh, you said you didn't want the cheese on top." I am not really sure what exactly that was supposed to mean, as the last time I checked a crumbled cheese and a salad dressing were two different things. During that same visit the music was so loud (in an empty restaurant) that we had to ask for it to be turned down so we could hear each other speak. This was also the same visit where we were constantly having to swipe flies away from our meals. If there were that many flies in the dining area, then I could only imagine what the kitchen looked like.
My entire family despises this poor excuse of an establishment, and have sworn to never give them our money again.
Amazing Brunch – Hands down the best brunch experience I have had... from the warm, neighborhood atmosphere to the astounding menu (how they replaced their steak frites with a breakfast steak even better is beyond me) to the staff, attentive and dutiful even in the midst of the mid-morning hustle and bustle. SPICY bloody Mary's, an extensive imported beer list or the rich and lovely Belgian Hot Chocolate... the beverages are even beyond perfect.
P.S. Try the French Toast: a butter-and-syrup drenched croissant.
Abominable & Abysmal – This was probably the worst restaurant experience I've had in years, actually no, IT WAS the worst restaurant experience I've had in years. I will first preface that this place used to be good a few years ago when the #2 chef in NJ would design the menu for each season and train his staff to execute each dish artfully and tastefully?when the owner did not skimp out on stocking the bar with better wines, beers and liquors. I remember it was a delight to go to this place and try out drinks with high end vodkas like The Jewel of Russia or Ultimat... or choosing from wines you do not normally stumble upon like in all the other restaurants in the area... but now its all the usual suspects: Stoli, Gray Goose and Cavit et al. The care and detail that used to make this place a gem have withered with the exit of the chef and the installment of new management.
We came with a party of 4 at around 8pm on Saturday and were told there was a 45 minute wait... we stuck around. When we were finally seated at 9 o'clock we were told that the appetizer we ordered was no longer being served because they were out of it, this was the case with the second appetizer we opted for (mind you there is only about 6 appetizers on the whole menu and its only 9pm!!) Anyway, the waitress was really rude about this, did not apologize in any way, instead just whisked the menus out of our hands and took the remainder of our order. It took 1 hour and twenty minutes for our food to get to our table!!!!!! at which point I canceled my order and just watched my friends eat. As I was sitting, one of the passing waiters snubbed my chair and almost spilt something on me... I am assuming this was some kind of retaliation method against me canceling my order? Later, as we got up to leave the waiters huddled in a group and started to point and laugh at us, I mean are these people in high school? We came for dinner, to have a good time, chat and relax and instead we get this horrible food, drink and service.
Stay in town! – Great location, narrow seatting chart with pleasant and romantic view of old Jersey City downtown.
Affable and knowledgeable service, almot seamless.
Can use a better polish back service.
Menu offers high quality items "tapas or main size" portions (loved that idea) along with a versatile wine selection and after dinner drinks.
If you like baby lamb chops, this is the right place to order them, don't be affraid to use your fingers..they are just delicious!
One of the best choices in the area, will go back to try the tuna and more.
Awful experience! – Went to Marco last night with my husband for Valentines Day and had a really miserable experience. They told us the wait would be 20 mins-an hour later they finally seated us (no apologies) literally crammed into a drafty corner. Our order was taken 20 minutes later & we were told we could not have the what we wanted because the kitchen was closing and the staff needed to go home! havent u heard of a last order call?
I have been here a bunch of times in the day but on a busy night like this they were a mess. The food is great-portions pretty small. But for the prices they are charging you expect top-notch service. Sorry M&P...you really let us down. There are a ton of newer places in the neighborhood I would prefer to go to anyday
Great Neighborhood Hangout – Looking for a great place for good food, good wine and great music, Marco & Pepe is the plcae. The atmospher is relaxing and inviting, the wine and beer list is extensive and the service is excellent. A great place to eat or just hang out at the bar. Kudos to the chef. Marco & Pepe is one of my favorite places, whether alone or with a group the service and food get ***** stars.
You'll become a Regular – Marco and Pepe has become one of my favorite restaurants. The ambience is casual and relaxing. The menu offers so much variety; you'll want to eat there more than once to try everything. Each dish has its own identity and offers a fistful of flavor. The wine/beer list is superb offering an ecclectic assortment to choose from. The staff is personable and friendly providing you with an unforgettable dining experience. Desserts are excellent. For chocolate lovers like myself I would definately reccomend the Warm Chocolate cake drizzled with raspberry reduction and served with a scoop of hazlenut gelato. It will definately hit the spot. If you happen to be in Jersey City I urge you to visit Marco and Pepe..Who knows it might become your favorite restaurant and I might even be there.
