The best spot around the corner
by NYCUWS4
My husband and I used to live a few blocks from Deux Amis and would go all the time ... it is the sweetest spot. The food is consistently delish- the steak au pouive is my all time favorite. There is no staff as charming or helpful as Bucky's- you must go here.
great steak

Just came here for dinner tonight w/ a friend and had a great meal. We waited until the last minute and thank goodness for that bc all the places we were going to try, we couldn?t get in and by chance we chose to ck our Deux Amis since it was close to my friend?s office. Got here about 7 and at 1st was a little apprehensive bc all we saw were old folks in the place, not a big deal right? Maybe there was some senior citizen discount going on that night, whatever. For starters we got an onion soup (it was ok but ive had better) & Crevettes Au Risotto (fresh sauteed jumbo shrimps served over tomato mushrooms risotto ?pretty darn good). For entree my friend got the Bass Poilee (seared striped bass sauteed spinach, crispy potato, capers, lemon sauce ? she said it was good but I didn?t try it) & I got the delicious Steak Au Poivre served with fresh peppercorn sauce & pommes frites & salad ? YUMMY! I ate the whole thing :-) we also got a side of potato cheese gratin. DONE. I am definitely coming back even though we were the youngest people in the restaurant.

Excellent brown sauces
by youngblood7
Perfect little French bistro near the UN and far far better than most. It's near Beekman/Sutton Place/UN, so it's an over 40 crowd. There is a neighborhood sense at the bar, for sure, with most patrons being from the hood. The bar is in front, typical NYC style, about 10 stools, 20 standing on a good day. Restaurant is a step-up in the rear, 8-10 tables. It is a little tight back there, but your neighbors don't care what you have to say, so it's pretty private.
The food. They know what they are doing. The menu is traditional without being ostrich-crazy. Expect what you hope a restaurant will be: good food, good service, no attitude, very nice bistro atmosphere. Nice touch ode to the Eiffel Tower in pictures and posters, but not too much. This is a great standard for the brown French fares, the duck, the veal, the chicken. Deux Amis is far preferred for those who don't want to be bothered by the pretention but want to feel good about the food, the service, the atmosphere and the value.
- Pros: it's a neighborhood place with well heeled neighbors who are value conscious
- Cons: one bathroom, but it's clean crowd
fabulous find

This place is just as fabulous as all the other "name" bistros, but no lines, no attitude. It's romantic and food is great. I'm hesitant to even write it up lest it get crowded from the buzz, but it's such a great place I had to weigh in!
- Pros: food, atmosphere
