Editorial Review for Power Pilates – by Drew Pisarra
The Scene
To the uninitiated, Pilates apparatus--with its chains, pulleys, straps, traversing bars and sliding padded seats--may look like circus training equipment. But the exercises performed thereon are about core muscle development, not the esoteric art of contortion. At this national chain (which sometimes partners with Equinox), a largely female clientele is taught a classical approach that trusts that the original methodology, and not a newfangled variation, is the best way to attain slimmer hips and flatter tummies, among other things.
The Workout
A recuperative system zeroing in on the abdomen, Pilates slowly clues your body in to proper alignment. The instructor (educated, no doubt, at one of this institution's training centers) will refocus your attention on your midsection as you perform one of the 500 movements indebted to dance as well as yoga. Think of it as the ultimate ab workout with too many exercises to ever get bored.

Just a quick note to thank you for a wonderful growth experience in this past weekend’s Intermediate Mat. Elin was no less than fantastic…a virtual role model! She gave very clear direction, goals and feedback. She was accessible for questions at all times. She instilled a positive outlook in all of us and was very inspiring. I certainly look forward to taking her workshops in the future.
Pros: Great organization and support
Cons: none

Pilates (which I started at the age of 48) has been a transformational part of my life. Just when most of my contemporaries are getting hip, back, and joint problems, I have developed more flexibility and range of motion than I've ever had! Right hip problems "run in my family." I don't have them. I know that it was Pilates that prevented them. I don't know what I'd do without it. I go twice per week when I'm in town. When I'm not, I do the mat workout in hotel rooms. It's a life saver. I plan to do it regularly until I die. Pilates is the ultimate mind/body workout. It changes not only one's body. It also changes the way you think. I can't recommend it highly enough. I shudder to think of what my body would be like now if I hadn't found Pilates!
