Editorial Review for Go Yoga – by Jennifer Pliska

The Scene
Nestled in the back of a mini-mall, this one-time girdle factory now offers a busy yoga schedule without any restricting attitudes. Owner and founder Lilia Mead (a licensed massage therapist and Jivamukti-trained instructor) has pulled together a demanding staff to head her daily small-to-moderate-sized classes in this spacious Williamsburg studio. Bright with natural light, Go Yoga has the added benefit of joint-friendly wood floors.

The Workout
Every instructor is certified in some form of hatha. Classes range from basic to advanced, with a few prenatal and restorative options thrown in as well; chanting and pranayama breathing are generally a part of the practice throughout. In keeping with the neighborhood vibe, the studio offers a Community Class once a week for a very discounted price.

My friend does work study here and invited me to the beginner class last week. There were a lot of more advanced people there, too, and by the end most of us were soaked with sweat. It was definitely a workout. It was my first class and I'm in okay shape, and afterward I felt like I had worked out, but I was not in any pain. Nicole was the instructor and is very friendly. She was very helpful and constructive about correcting people's posture and form without making anyone feel stupid for not getting it right. It was a bit of a spiritual practice (we opened Sanskrit chants about enlightenment and ended with reflection on the practice), but I didn't feel pressured to believe anything, nor is it a cult-like atmosphere. With my first class I got my second one free, and I'll be going back this week. It was a little bit tight in the room because this place is so popular. I'd recommend it to anyone!

Pros: Great for beginners, 2nd class free, close to train

Cons: Room was packed because it's a great studio

they have some great teachers (michael and julia for starters; i haven't tried them all), classes are often accompanied by good music, and their intermediate/advanced classes are actually significantly more challenging than their open classes, unlike in many yoga places. the only thing i don't like is that the byzantine system of fees and fee-based rules gives the place an uptight and money-oriented feel, which i don't find very becoming in a yoga studio. (e.g., different fee schedules for different types of classes, short expiration periods on cards, $2 mat rentals and even so you have to clean the mat yourself [yes, of course you can bring your own mat, i'm just giving examples], you have to pay for a new card if you lose yours [i mean pay for the card itself, not just the classes on it], etc.) but still recommended.

Pros: the teachers

Cons: the rules and fee system
