Editorial Review for Equinox Fitness Clubs – by Drew Pisarra

The Scene
With its ultra-clean, minimalist décor and its topnotch staff, Equinox raises the bar for chain health clubs. At consistently spacious facilities, the design team continually maximizes natural light and highlights organic architectural quirks. Equipment from industry standards like Cybex and Hammerstrength are paired with high-end machinery--including one specifically designed for the company by Life Fitness. Even the piped-in music (which varies from room to room) has been thoughtfully programmed. Locker rooms are uniformly spotless.

The Workout
The in-house personal-training program--which approaches strength, balance and coordination in a cyclical pattern--is so highly regarded that some independent gyms recognize it in lieu of more established national certifications. Indeed, instructors in the top tier must have academic articles published in their area of expertise. Classes are offered round the clock and range from Spinning and yoga to more unique hybrids incorporating boxing and ballet. Many studios boast sprung floors.

This is the worst gym you can sign into. First of all, everyone who works there are extremely rude. They don't lift a finger to help you out. Equinox is owned by a real estate agency, so what they want is your money. They told me to sign up because they were having a discount on the initiation fee. The next day the initiation fee was 0$!!-free of charge. Also the trainers don't care about helping you out. You receive one free lesson to learn the machines and thats it. They didn't even teach me about stretching. After the first lesson they won't help you out on purpose, even if you are making wrong movements, so it forces you to pay for them at 90$ an hour!! Also, try asking for anything, the people at the reception will turn you down. I once took by friend to equinox and she paid 25 dollars for a day pass. It was 5:00pm. The gym was closing at 6 and no one cared to tell us when we were paying for the day pass. When we tried complaining, they were extremely rude and said that we should have known: it was a holiday.
