Cheap, reliable, and delicious, this is the kind of Cuban place that New York needs more of, and always has. The cuban and media noche sandwiches are on point, the empanadas flaky, the pernil moist and garlicky, and the flan warm and jiggly. The service is friendly and brisk too. Just a complete winner.
Amazing Cuban Food. Sophie's is so good it's a little addictive, okay really addictive. You get real home-made food that is inexpensive and doled out in huge portions. The only thing lacking at Sophie's is space. The tables are a little crowded together and going there for lunch can be an adventure - but it is well worth the effort.
Editorial Review by Citysearch Editors. Lunch counter-style restaurant serves Cuban comfort food, like the instantly-recognizable cubano sandwich and sides of platanos, black beans, and rice.
Not bad, but not great!.
The food at Sophie's is average. I was surprised with the high reviews! I am Latina and I ate great spanish food everyday. Some of their dishes lacks latin flavor, and I've tried practically all their dishes. Don't get me wrong the food is good, but it's not great! The portions are awesome! The price is fantastic!
Several of my co-workers feel the same, but you do the taste test for yourself. Maybe I just have higher expectation with Latin Cuisines.
Good fast food. I came in for lunch & the place was packed with lots of customers. Luckily, we got seated right away. The food came out fast w/ good service. It's a very popular place. The food is decent considering the quick turn around of the food. Definitely would go back if I'm in downtown again.
Great lunch special.
The food here is quite good and the lunch specials are hard to be beat. They offer different cuban food for each day of the week. 6 bucks will get you one of the days specials and 2 sides.
These places are jammed for lunch so get on the earlier side or later side. My only gripe was that the food was all in big bins, but that's expected for a lunch rush hour type crowd.
home-made cuban ... a hidden treasure. This place is truly a hidden treasure. I work 2 blocks away. I discovered the place a couple of months ago and now eat there 2-3 times a week. The food is authentic, excellent home-made Cuban. The rice is cooked and spiced to perfection (#1 test for good Cuban food !), as so are the ropa vieja, picadillo, beef & onions, etc. The place is nothing fancy, but the food rivals any of the top Cuban restaurants in NYC ...
Great food and price. It' only open for lunch but the food is so good! It's about $7 for lunch and they have take-out or dine-in. It gets very crowded so I would suggest that you get their early. Food is excellent and they also have empenadas and plaintains which are good for an afternoon snack.
yummy!. i work in this area and i stopped in to get an order to go. i got rice & beans & roast pork (cuban style). it came out to $7. i thought it was a bit pricey for a take out place, but noticed that a LOT of ppl were lined up for the food, so it must be good, i thought. well, it was. the roast pork was very flavorful and juicy. will definitely go back to try out some of the other stuff.
