Tips for Jules Karp Coins & Bullion Inc

Trust me on this...Jules died years ago. He, unfortunately, left the keys to the castle with a bunch of completely inept loons.

TERRIBLE COIN DEALER. Rude, dishonest and I will not be returning to this dealer. I have been collecting coins for over 20 years, and the salespeople of Jules Karp tried to mislead me and were extremely rude when I attempted to point out the inconsistencies in their pricing. Do yourself a favor and avoid this shop. There are plenty of good coin dealers in Manhattan that operate under strict regulations, and this is not one of them.

Don't trust them. Dont accept 1st offer.. I went to Karp to sell my dads coins. They gave me a price. It was kind of low but I accepted it.$285. Two minutes later the woman came back and said oh that's a little high. I'll give you $235.

WOW, A GOLD DOLLAR IN GREAT SHAPE AND VARIOUS OTHER COINS, SOME SILVER FOR $235.

BEWARE OF THIS PLACE and if you go there DON'T ACCEPT THEIR FIRST OFFER THEY WILL LOWER IT.

NO WONDER THEIR IN THE BASEMENT, THAT'S WHERE THEY BELONG.

PLEASE LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE! Horrible Experience. I don't normally engage in this kind of online review-writing, but based on the dealings I've had with Jules Karp Inc I felt morally compelled to register to a website like this to warn others of this awful company.

My experience with them began almost two years ago, when a friend of mine and I were investing sporadically in silver. He had done some business with them in the past, and I was enough of a rookie in precious metal investments to wholly trust his judgement.

As noted in another review, the office is a cramped, dingy basement ordeal without even standing room for more than 4 customers at a time. My friend and were looking to each buy a 100oz bar of silver, which we did; his was an Engelhard and mine was a generic 100oz slab of metal with 'Certified Ingots' stamped on it. We both paid the same price, $2800. This seemed a little odd to me at the time, but I was repeatedly assured this was standard procedure by the clueless, frazzled woman who is essentially the only employee there that will talk to you on the phone, which is frustrating enough in itself.

Anyway, my friend had no problem holding onto his bar for about a year, and selling it right back to them. On the other hand, when I tried to sell mine to another bullion merchant closer to my home, they wouldn't take it. I spent weeks calling and talking to different buyers around all of New England, and folks were either not interested from the moment they heard it was generic or turned me away the minute they saw the physical bar.

The worse part was calling the office and talking to that woman about trying to sell it back to them. She outright denied any wrongdoing on their part, and refused to buy the bar back from me at any price ("Oh, I actually have enough silver right now, I'm not interested."). I am now stuck with a very effective, but VERY overpriced paperweight. I'll have to end up sending it to a refinery, and they'll test it, and even if it is pure .999 silver they'll pay me wayy under spot per ounce for it, and I won't make any money at all off the 2 years time and money invested and the hours I've spent stressed out trying to get rid of it.

AVOID JULES KARP at ALL COSTS!

Oy Vey Wouldn't Go Back. The guard directs you to the service elevator where you press a button on the side of the elevator and the service elevator takes you to the basement of an office building. He directs you down a long hall, make a left, and it's the first office on the right. Now sign on the door, just a mezzizuah, a large security sticker (no barking dog) and a door bell. A woman answered the door looking all fashimeled and fakakeled and tells you to come in. You still don't know that you've come to the right place. As somebody has already indicated on this site and other review sites, this underground crypt is a mess and basically you have to ask for what you want as they don't display their coins. "What do you want" I reply "I am interested in buyin some silver, what do you have. Do you have bullion, ingots or what?" She replies "how much do you want" "well, can I see what I am buying, and then maybe you can tell me how much over spot you charge and how much the coins are as well." Too much information. "Do you have a cold today" I ask. She starts kvetching "No it's just too much snow" She looks totally overwhelmed and if the office is any indication of what's going on within them then things are very much in disarray. I ask her can she show me some Morgans and Peace dollars. Goes back into the back room where the family is busy at work. The guy comes out and slams three piles of coins and mumbles "25, 26, and 27" and then goes back into his angry commatose state in front of his computer.

All this to say, EXTREMELY unhelpful and simply not pleasant. I did buy somethings since I was there and paid cash at $1.50 above spot which isn't bad for ingots. So you can buy silver there if you know exactly what you want. They have graded coins but don't reveal it until you ask but it is not the highest reputable grading company which makes a difference for other collectors. Although, I paid cash, they charged me sales tax which no other coin company I've bought from has. And I would bet a hefty gold coin that they aren't reporting it to the IRS.

No smiles, no service and an office with no windows in dissarray. With all the options to buy silver and gold in this day and age, I ask you if these are the kind of people you want to do business with. This doesn't make them bad people and it doesn't make what they have to offer bad but I donj't want to buy anything from anybody that can't at least demonstrate some modicum of service.

Jules Karp is Fabulous. I love these guys! I've bought elsewhere, but since discovering them, I've never bought from anyone else. They're friendly, willing to spend time with you (assuming it isn't a crowded day), and they're an endless fountain of knowledge about what's going on in the world of coins. My friends and I make frequent "Karp Runs," to buy more coins whenever we have extra money to spend.

I don't understand the guy who gave Karp a bad review. It so doesn't match my experience.

AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL EXPERIENCE. Called up Jules Karp and he told me he had 1 oz gold pieces. Told him I wanted to spend a substantial amount of money. Told me to come in,

I arrived and the place is a pig sty. Jules himself came down from the 3rd floor and I dont want to go into physical descriptions but he 'fit in' in the environment.

I went to Citibank before I arrived and took out my money. When I arrived Jules said he wouldnt take my cash because he would have to 'fill out lots of forms'. He requested I go back and get a bank check.

I was very annoyed because (a) I called him in the morning and he never mentioned he only takes bank cheques and not cash and (b) he insinuated he could take cash but didnt want to because it was 'work'. What type of business operates this way ? ? ? ?

All in all,......waste of time. I dont think he has what he says he has when you advance call. The establishment is a dinjky operation and not serious about business.

I went to MTB (Manfred, Tordella and Brooks) in the past but went here to broaden my experience with buying. Will defintely stick with MTB. They are down the block and way professional. That is, they will take my money without embarassing and insulting me.

Obviously,...I did not return with a bank check. They lost my business THAT day and all my future business. Dumb move.

ALL IN ALL,...............AVOID !!@!!!!!!!

I DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE.

That is MY opinion based on MY experience.
