Great steak, atmosphere.priced accordingly. Very nice atmosphere. Great food. Very expensive. Worth the trip.
Not worth celebrating your special event there. This past weekend after seeing The Merchant of Venice starring Al Pacino my company of 6 headed to S&W for good wine and steaks. First impression (we were seated at the semi-private room) is getting-old and not in a charming way decor. Our table was unstable. But who cares if the service is good and food is great. Right? Well, wrong! The moment our waiter opened his mouth I wanted to send him back to where he came from. Loud and obnoxious, he proceeded to recommend his favorite wine in a manner "well, if you must bother me with such questions". Excuse me, but I really don't care what you like. I asked your opinion about Spanish wines on your list. The seafood platter was very good. Steaks arrived - porter house for two and filet mignons for the rest. The jerk of the waiter proceeded to separate the already cut pieces of the porter with two spoons. Nice try - but they weren't butter tender. In fact the middle of the steak was RAW. The entire cut of meat was swimming in more than a 1/4" of fat. I love steak but that much fat made me a little uneasy. Is it that difficult to drain some of that fat off the plate? We ask the waiter to bring the steak back to the kitchen to get it to at least medium. He mumbles something under his breath and goes away. Several times the waiter cracked jokes about our comments about the steaks in the hall way leading to the kitchen. The mignons looked better but I am told they are charcoal bitter on the outside and barely cooked on the inside. The chief didn’t bother with salt and pepper either. One of us decides to try lamb ribs only to be disappointed (flavorless meat was the description). Ten minutes later the waiter returns our porter with black charred top and less raw middle. Seeing our facial expressions he admits that the grill might be too hot. ??? Is this the first time somebody cooks a steak in this place?! He proceeds to separate the pieces as he did before with two spoons only to catapult a piece off the plate staining the table cloth with fat. At this point he's really irritated. My second glass of beer in the hands of the same waiter lands on the edge of my GF's wine glass spilling some of the beer onto my hand and cuff. What an imbecile. We left about a thousand dollars there for less then memorable experience. Will I go back? Unlikely. We had a wonderful experience at RC in Princeton where steaks were truly delicious and service was impeccable.
Smart Ass Staff!!!.
While on my first trip to New York with my parents and my fiancé we visited Smith and Wollensky's steakhouse. When we were seated our waiter introduced himself and proceeded to give us great service, he helped with menu suggestions and answered any questions that we had etc.... we had a great meal. After settling the cheque and giving our waiter a rather large tip, my Mum used the restrooms just off the waiters/staff area, where she heard some rather awful comments about 'the gang of cultchie Irish??'
She came back to our table quite upset when we questioned her as to what was wrong, she explained and being the only Irish in the restaurant we couldn't believe it.... we decided not to say anything just in case it was a mistake but when my fiancé went to the restrooms he heard comments about '$400....' which was the rough amount of our bill??
There were no staff on the floor so my Mum went to the staff area and asked for the 'Irish Manager', who came to us during our meal to say 'Hi and welcome to the Irish as he is 3rd generation Irish....', he and another smirky, smart ass assistant approached our table (upon their approach, manager turned to smart ass and explained that 'cultchie' was not a good word!!) and we explained what we had heard and that it had just ruined our evening, straight off the smart ass assistant said that my Mum must have been mistaken and that there was no way anyone would have said that.... only their bar staff use words like that??.... And that he would pick up our cheque.... (our complaint was never about money??)
He was extremely rude and abrupt and kept speaking over me, which I found to be worse that any comments.... while I asked him to let me finish speaking he had a very rude grin on his face... the manager never said a word and let his assistant mouth off at us telling us how wrong we were.... and that he was 90% sure that nothing like that had been said... well 90% is not 100%??
sad but true. i stoppped by for a quick lunch and while i was eating the cheese burger i had seen on the corner of my eye two mouses running past my table i got disgusted when i saw the mouses i was half way through my luch paid the check and bounced on out of there
what a disappointment.
Last year we went to S&W as part of restaurant week. We had lunch, and were floored by the great service and the divine food. Then we decided to go again this year.
Right from the start, our waiter seemed utterly depressed and as if he didn't want to be there. While I understand why he might not have wanted to work, it didn't excuse him bringing his mood to work.
We ordered from the restaurant week menu, to his dismay, but opted for a glass of wine and a side dish each - which, you would think - make him smile a little. It didn't.
I wanted my steak cooked medium, my fiance - medium rare. Well, I got his and he got mine. The waiter never came around to make sure we got everything the way we ordered it, and even after we switched plates across the table - he didn't bother showing up. Also, when my fiance was running low on his wine, the server was nowhere to be found, to offer a second glass. I shared mine with him.
When came time for dessert, we weren't worthy of a table crumber or any other effort to clean our table prior to dropping the dessert. When the waiter bothered showing up to ask if we wanted any coffee, I asked to see a desert menu for after dinner drinks and dessert wines. The waiter recited the list of coffees.
"But do you have any after dinner drinks, sherries, ports?" I asked again. "Yes, we have a full list of cordials." he replied. "may I please see the list?" I asked again. "I'd like to see what dessert wines you might have".
"We only have a list of dessert wines by the bottle" he replied, still not making an effort to move.
"Great. May I see it?"
When the list came, the were actually several ports by the glass on it. I chose one, albeit very reluctantly at this point. In the end, although I always tip 20% or more - I left exactly 15%.
And to make matters worse - we had to suffer a noisy woman who would not shut up throughout the entire meal.
"May I see the list?"
Mediocre Service. We decided to check out this weekend during Restaurant Week and ordered the prix fixe menu. 2 points to make: (1) We both ordered steaks but were surprised that the waiter didn't even bother to ask us how we wanted the steak (medium rare or well done, etc). (2) While I was still finishing my dessert, the cheque was thrown to our table (we didn't ask for it). Waiter didn't even bother to ask if we want coffee or tea w/ our dessert. We're fine w/ the other junior wait staff but it's the main waiter who served us who seems to have an attitude. Maybe it has to do w/ smaller tips since we have the prix fixe. There are steakhouses w/ better service out there for sure!
Nice to say you've been.... Being that s&w's is such a New York staple, I'm definitely not regretting eating there. That being said, better steak can definitely be found elsewhere. The staff was extremely nice (even though we didn't have reservations) and even provided us with a round of drinks on the house. We were tucked away in a little corner of the place, which added to the atmosphere and definitely insured that we had a nice meal. If you are looking for old school NY, eat here, if you are looking for a great steak, go somewhere else.
old school staple. Leave the front restaurant to the tourists. If you want the "experience", go to the grill room (entrance on 49th). Best host in the city. Great bartenders. Amazing vibe. The Grill is a "locals" joint. To all the negative reviewers whining about price and service...take your family to Outback. Eat your bloomin onion and wallow in your mediocrity. This is a NYC institution.
Mediocre meat and very bad service.
I treated guests who love good steaks and was so disappointed. The meat arrived over-cooked and warm not hot. The asparagus was also overcooked and even the salad was a failure. Smith and Wollensky's idea of vinaigrette was a cream sauce.
As though the food was not terrible enough, the service was even worse. They never refilled the water glasses and did not check to see if we needed anything. Ever. Most of the time, the wait staff was grouped together talking, not waiting on tables. In fact, to exit we had to step around kthe cluster of waiters.
This is an expensive restaurant and there is no excuse for such awful food and lousy service.
Avoid it.. I went for a business lunch and there was a large crawling brown insect struggling to get out of my cobb salad! The kicker was that the waiter did not seem surprised or say "this has never happened before..." He covered it with a napkin and announced to the roomful of patrons who were staring at my table, because I had yelped when I saw it, that it was...a fly. Believe me, it was not. It was the most disgusting restaurant experience of my life. I would not take a chance here again.
