Sparkle Editorial Review
The Concept
Billed as gay improv, Sparkle neither skewers nor embraces homophobic stereotypes but instead delivers a boldly irreverent look at societal aberrants whose sexual preferences, like their choice in picnic tableware and adherence to forensic protocol, may be constantly called into question. Containing a cursory reference to Bette Middler or Chastity Bono at most, a single scene may then go on to outrageously ridicule self-induced abortions, cigarette-smoking three-year-olds and an incestuous menage a trois. Somehow, it works.
The Cast
Each of the performers brings something special to the mix. From Crazy Pete Zias, it's a mastery of the comedy of incomprehension. Often relating to the others with a deer-in-the-headlights stare as if in a drug-induced haze, he conveys hysterical single-mindedness in all his manias. His cohorts, the mustachioed Mark Sam Rosenthal and the rubbery-faced Jeff Hiller add zip and zeal respectively to the zaniness.
