Nice Matin

French Riveria style dining in the Upper West Side

  • Award Winning Wine List
  • Outside Dining
  • Saturday & Sunday Brunch

Veteran chef Andy D'Amico strikes a popular chord with a multitude of Riviera-inspired hors d'oeuvre like pissaladiere and panisses, and continues the bold, garlic-imbued theme with soupe au pistou, fennel-cured mackerel, and roast cod with ratatouille nicoise and anchoiade. In true Upper West and French Riviera fashion, warm-weather sidewalk seating abounds. Editorial Review for Nice Matin – by Dana Bowen

The Scene
Chintzy Victorian wallpaper covers one wall, psychedelic patterns decorate another and massive chandeliers--minus crystals, plus bare bulbs--hang above elevated dining platforms. Despite the dizzying decor, tableware is sleek, service is slick and the "Sex and the City"-type crowd seem happy to endure sometimes-long waits at the front bar.

The Food
Chef and co-owner Andy D'Amico interprets Nice's breezy Mediterranean cuisine with more style than sophistication, and the crowds applaud. Take the fun track with relatively inexpensive hors d'oeuvres like garlicky grilled merguez, leeks vinaigrette and rouille-doused poached mussels. Don't skip the pissaladiere--a caramelized onion Nicoise pizza with an herb-y, anchovy-olive kick. Simple, long-cooked beef daube is a beautiful thing, but fussier dishes, like stringy rabbit ravioli, and meagerly portioned, fishy roast cod, flop. The gooey Gruyere-onion burger--which inspired the name of the owners' other venture, Five Napkin Burger, in midtown--its aged beef slathered with aioli, is reason enough to return.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

The lengthy international list has many options less than $40, but start with one of the 30-plus wines by the glass. The Babich sauvignon blanc from South Africa or the Castle Rock pinot noir from Sonoma (both $8) are great choices. Cocktails--including margaritas and a pernod-laced abomination called Creamy Southern--are less pleasing.

I've been here quite a few times and the last time was great. We had appetizers, entrees and desserts and the entire meal was delicious. I had been a few months before and was disappointed, but we tried it again and it is as good as I remember it in that old days! We'll be back!!

This restaurant is my favorite in NYC! The service is excellent, the food is the best I've had -- of ANY entree it is the best I've ever had. The atmosphere is nice but not too fancy or too casual. Hosts, waitstaff and management are all welcoming, professional and provide service above and beyond expectations. The bar staff truly knows how to make a fine coffee beverage and the cocktails are fabulous! I highly suggest Nice Matin for breakfast, lunch or dinner, I myself frequent as often as I can for every meal possible. There is nothing more rewarding or enjoyable than becoming a regular at this restaurant!

Pros: Ambience, FOOD, cocktails, espresso drinks, dessert menu, wine list, service

Cons: I can't eat there every meal of every day.
