some technicians lacking professionalism.
This place is known for their Brazilian waxes, and I've been going here for the past year for that service.
Overall, it's a very good experience. It's in a great location, the ambience is relaxing, I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes for my appointment, even when I show up early.
The technicians for the most part are friendly and comforting through this rather uncomfortable experience. Everyone I've had knew what they were doing, and were efficient---you're in and out of there in 15 minutes. If you can get the sugaring done instead of the wax, it cuts down on the pain factor considerably.
However, the service and professionalism is hit or miss. Most of the technicians are nice, but today I had a rather unpleasant experience with Reshma that I think should be shared. She knew what she was doing, and it did quickly, I'll give her that much. But she was condescending and borderline rude to me throughout. She made no secret she was annoyed that I was tensing up during our session. I, in turn, became annoyed also, "It hurts." And she replied, "well, it's a Brazilian!" Yeah, and so? I'm not allowed be anxious or tense because I knew about the pain going in? There's a reason I come here and drop more than $80 (including tip) for this service. Because I want to be treated nicely during this delicate task! If I wanted to be treated like cattle, I'd go elsewhere and pay much less---there's no lack of salons doing Brazilians in Manhattan.
To add icing to the cake, as we were walking out, she rolled her eyes at the receptionist, like the way you'd roll your eyes at a friend after dealing with someone annoying. I'm right behind you! It was unprofessional, not to mention uncalled for.
I'll return, but will be requesting NOT Reshma.
great experience. i came here for a brazilian last week. the best brazilian i've had to date. they knew their stuff and treated me well. everything was clean...very professional. i will be back.
Horrible experience. The first time I went there I was so please. Maybe I got an poorly trained threader, but they hardly left any eyebrows on my face. I asked her to leave them thick it took me so long to grow back. I really regret going there,
To be fair, I used to think the services provided at Shobha were excellent. A friend recommended Shobha for eyebrow threading to me when I moved to New York last year, and I loved it.
But now, I can twirl my growing mustache and stew, since I won't return. The same friend recently told me about Shobha's new "policy," if it can even be called that. I understand the 24-hour cancellation policy, but was not informed that one would have to pay in full for a rescheduling if it was over a certain amount. The woman taking the order was very condescending and tried to bully my friend into coming in for at least a $10 appointment. This makes no sense, considering that whomever was scheduled to do the rest of the work would be out of an appointment. Apparently, Shobha now needs 24-hour notice to cancel an appointment--even if you schedule last-minute when it's impossible to give such notice.
The condescending person at the Soho location said that Shobha had her credit card info and would charge her anyway for a reschedule. She asked to speak to a manager to figure out what to do. Someone called her 15 minutes AFTER her appointment would have started to tell her a replacement had been found and she wouldn't be charged. The bottom line: Shobha wants your money, not your business. The women answering the phone were very evasive about giving her the managers' names. I was going to go there tomorrow, but I refuse to return. I was thinking about being a bearded lady this Halloween anyway. Shobha lost not one, but two, customers.
Great!. I was nervous! Trying a new spot for a Brazilian is terrifying. I've been going to Bliss which is efficient and relatively painless. However, had gotten my brows threaded at Shobha before and was happy so I gave it a try. I am a BIG wimp and she did a great job! In and out in 12 minutes, really fast, no going over the same spot twice, very pleasant conversation to distract me, and all around pleasant! Her name was Kanjeet, I think, and she did my bikini and brows--I highly recommend! As with most places, ther might be some less qualfied folks so as with all things, get a recommendation from here or elsewhere for a specific person to request.
Great but miss Miranda. I have been going to their Soho location. Miranda was great but now she left. Does anyone know where she is?
do NOT allow them to keep your card on file.
i've been a customer there for five years -always felt uncomfortable that they require you to keep your card # on file to hold appointments. this week, by bank account was debited $100 WITHOUT MY PERMISSION because they made a mistake sometime last august (7 months ago) and never charged my credit card - along with every other client that day, as i understand.
today, they called me to say they were "going to go ahead and charge me for those services" and i said i wanted to check my statements before they proceeded with the charge, and probably want to place this on my credit card. when i signed in to my bank account online, I found that actually they had ALREADY deducted the money from my checking account against my wishes.
they don't seem to get how the situation was totally mishandled - the manager that I spoke to had no clue about customer service. she kept claiming that this was somehow not their mistake but an error on the part of some processing company they work with - and no offer to resolve any of it.
i will never return here as a customer. anyway, the service was always pretty inconsistent. this is new york, i'm sure there are plenty of better options out there.
total nightmare - I was cut - save yourself!. I went to shobha for a bikini wax (I did not ask for a brazilian, just a simple bikini). the technician greeted me with a kind of grunting sound. no hello, no smile, no looking me in the eye - she just shuffled up, and grunted. this was a drag - but what happened next was a nightmare. she waxed, and when I looked at it, I asked her to take off A LITTLE more. I indicated with my hand. a little more on the sides. I lay back down, and she resumed, and I felt a pain so excruciating that I SCREAMED. she ignored me, and tried to continue waxing, even though I put my hand in the way to stop her. she kept trying to push my hand away, saying "relax, relax. I didn't know why it hurt SO badly until I got home and showered - she had ripped my flesh. there were two deep tears. it was hideous! I had to see my gyn to have it checked out. she photographed the wounds. maybe the technician didn't know what she was doing? was she trained properly? doesn't seem like it, and I don't know. I can only say for sure that this experience was awful in every way.
Great for full brazilian waxing!! highly recommend it!. I was nervous about going for my first full brazilian bikini wax. Too have to drop "trou" and bare all to a complete stranger who would pour hot wax on this sensitive area, and then just yank the hair out without any mercy just wasn't all that appealing to me...call me crazy...but I was going to go see my new beau, and wanted everything to be just right. So after my sister declared endlessly how it is the best thing to do and to stop the shaving as I had been doing, i submitted and set the appointment. The atmosphere was great and I felt rather at ease when I arrived, though it took me just a bit to find the place...but either way, it was great. I went to see Miranda, whom I heard was fantastic from many reviews I had read. Well, I must say she was absolutely amazing! She made me feel totally at ease and just chatted away with me while she went to work, and the results were fantastic!!! I must say, my guy was very pleased with it as well ;) I will definitely go back to see her!!
Where else would you go for a great brazilian bikini wax?.
I have been getting a Brazilian Bikini wax regularly for over six years but recently a friend told me about a different technique called 'sugaring.' I was intrigued and just had to try it myself. So I did a google search, read some reviews and decided to try Shobha. I was apprehensive because it was more expensive but it was worth a try. I was not worried about pain or the awkwardness... I already know it's painful and the awkwardness goes away with time. I've been doing it for so many years.
First - Shobha is a friendly and very spa-like environment. My experience started with a glass of water and a smile. I filled out som paperwork because it was my first time there but it took less than 2 minutes. I waited a few minutes but I was 15 mnutes late for my appointment so I didn't mind waiting... I was just glad they honored my appointment after I was so late.
The wax exprience - My technician was Tabi. She was GREAT. She didn't leave the room while I undressed (another reviewer mentioned this and it wasn't nearly as creepy asI thought). As I undressed, she prepared the wax, sticks and strips. Tabi wore non-latex gloves, which made feel SO much more comfortable. She explained a few things to me when she started.
One important thing for you to keep in mind is that - Sugaring doesn't always work on coarse hair. My hair is very thick and coarse but it worked great, anyway. The texture of your hair changes after about six months of regular waxing. If the sugaring didn't work, she planned to use the regular wax.
The wax was a little hot but I didn't get burned. Their 'no double dip' policy is so great, also. No stick is dipped into the wax/sugar twice. I never even thought of about this when I got waxed at other spas and now I can't imagine going back to a place that DOES double-dip.
To make a long story short - I totally recommend Shobha for Brazilian Bikini Waxing!!!
