Editorial Review for Maccarone, Inc. – by Karen Rosenberg
The Vibe
In a bold move even by art-world standards, former Luhring Augustine director Michele Maccarone decided to open her first gallery on a grungy stretch of Canal Street--several long, garbage-strewn blocks away from the Lower East Side's hub of shopping and dining. Walk in and you're more likely to be greeted by a big mess in the corner than a polished desk and receptionist.
The Draw
The gallery maintains a Protean aesthetic: walls and floors are often re-configured for specific installations, as in the attention-grabbing inaugural show by Christoph Buchelm. Maccarone's Rolodex reflects her years logged in Chelsea, so while the space may feel disorienting, the roster is a soothingly familiar mix of Euro and homegrown talent: Christian Jankowski and Olav Westphalen, to name a few.
