Editorial Review for Piazza Mercato – by Craige Moore
The Scene
In an area one would expect to be already teeming with Italian markets, Piazza Mercato is a novelty. Within weeks after opening in the summer of 2002, family-owned Piazza had a loyal fan base of foodies willing to pay over $10 a pound for sausages cured on-site. A dense forest of sopressata, prosciutto, salami and the elusive slightly sweet, slighty spicy caccatorino hang from the market's ceiling.
The Food
Brick-oven heroes stuffed with fresh mozzerella, tender sundried tomatoes and basil, or a sausage variety or two can easily top out at over $10. Piazza suggests over 100 sandwich combinations, but if customers are still stumped, other offerings include the spaghetti pie or rustic deep-dish pizzas. Cooks will find semolina flour, three kinds of risotto, local grade-A-plus hamburger, 100-year-old vinegar and produce that could hardly look fresher on the vine.

Behind the SausageA glass partition in back gives customers a view of the sausage-making process in a kitchen so clean it gleams.

no, cooks will NOT find semolina flour here. i drove quite a distance because of this write-up only to be told that they don't carry semolina flour.

Meats better then Whole Foods, selection of olive oils and vinegars impressive beyond belief. You can order any meat, any cut, any time if you don't see it on display. I order fresh foe gras once - it was amazing. The best lamb and rib eye I can find anywhere. They also age their own porter house. The best fresh mozarella I've ever had in any of the top restaurants in the city. They also carry such rare items as Frech pink lemondat, italian cocao for hot chocolate, infused oils, french mustard, etc. In other words if you are a food fanatic or just looking for the very best ingridients, look no further!
Pros: they can get you any kind of meat you imaginable
Cons: a bit pricy
