Glimpses of the Silk Road Editorial Review
Early Superhighway
Parked in a balcony above the Met's lobby, this compact exhibit boasts 37 souvenirs from the overland trade route that once linked China to the Middle East. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas sit side by side with character-rich sculptural heads, one elaborately tiered bronze brazier and a cartoonish earthenware camel. With their blend of iconography and motifs from Chinese, Indian, Central Asian, Roman and Hellenistic traditions, these hybrid artifacts suggest what a multicultural experience the trip must have been 2,000 years ago.
Rhyta From Russia
The kings of the caravan are two Second Century Parthian Empire drinking vessels called Rhyta (loaned from the Moscow Oriental Museum). To say these ivory tusks are intricately carved is an understatement--one tapers into a fierce winged lion griffin with thrusting claws. Reassembled from 350 fragments, that one proves to be an especially smashing piece.
