NOT a salsa place!. After hearing that Copa is the place to go for great salsa and merenge, I was incredibly disappointed when I finally experienced it. My group arrived at about 11:15pm (they open at 11pm). First, my friend's boyfriend was not let in because of the shoes he was wearing. The rest of his outfit was fine, but the bouncers did not feel his shoes were good enough. So my friend and her boyfriend left. The big disappointment was the music, which also dictated the crowd. They played maybe 4 salsa songs. My friends and I went for the sole purpose of salsa dancing. After playing a mere 4 salsa songs, the music switched to rap and annoying hip hop. I could go anywhere to hear that. The cover for women that night was free, thank god! But men were expected to pay $25. For what? Just to listen to non-music they could have heard at any other bar/club? Ridiculous. The crowd was rowdy and plain deginerate, not classy like Copa's reputation expresses. I can see why it was the last weekend. It is supposedly closing down and moving to another location. Maybe in the future, they will bring back the old Copa style.

Tues Night Salsa -- Internet Coupons Not Honored...plenty of other places to dance in NYC. 10 friends and I went on a Tues night with discount coupons printed from the internet. A number of other people on line had the same coupons and were ready to use them. All of us were told that those coupons were not going to be honored...and we were not given a reason why.

Paying an extra $10 isn't a big deal. What is a big deal is how rude the bouncers were.

My friends and I haven't been back since. While the dancing space is huge there are a lot of other places (e.g. LQs, Link, salsa studios, etc.) to go if you're primarily going because you simply enjoy dancing.

Avoid on college night-Thursdays!!!. They host college night on Thursdays, but don't be fooled by the name! You only have to be at least 17 to get in (including guys), so the place is PACKED with young high school kids. It's the only club that lets kids in that young,so they all flock there. It's way too crowded to dance, so you end up standing around. I used to find it fun when i was 17.But now that I'm actually able to get into real clubs, I notice how immature that crowd really is.

Go On A Discount Night. Latin dancers unite! This is a great place to shake your thang without having to splurge too much on cover charges and drink prices. The music is eclectic around Latin America with bits of hip hop fused in there. Ambiance is filled with 20-30 somethings who are just out to have a good time.

This Latin dance hall has relocated and doubled in size since the time it inspired Barry Manilow, but live salsa and merengue bands continue to reign over the hip-shaking, shoulder-rolling crowd. Beneath the swirling disco balls and glowing plastic palm trees of the vast Carmen Miranda Room, pro dancers rip it up next to novices just riding the beat. Downstairs, the smaller, darker Copa Room pumps hip-hop and dance.

The Draw
The Copacabana can accommodate 4,000 guests, and by 6:30pm on Tuesday evenings, expect to see hundreds in line outside for the after-work party. The rice, beans, veggies and entree selections in the free buffet are basic, but it beats the average happy hour's greasy buffalo wings. Plus, you get to kick up your heels on the early side.

I agree with the other reviews--really creepy, older guys. Girls, likewise, were a little on the skanky side. We all like hip-hop dancing for a warm-up to salsa dancing, but the guys kept grinding behind us as though we couldn't feel it. They even brought out go-go dancers (who, contrary to their name and occupation, could not dance!), which was really cheesy for such a classy-LOOKING club.

We headed down to salsa and the crowd was a little tamer (and a lot older). We were by far the youngest people by 10 years (we're 22). The band was great and the floor huge. The crowd was friendly and bc it was salsa, most kept their limits.

The atmosphere: by far, one of the most beautiful, classiest old school clubs Ive ever been to. Not cheap looking at all.

A HUGE Letdown!. I had heard about Copa for years and had thought that it was one of the more exclusive latin places in NY.. boy was I wrong...I was worried about getting in on friday with my jeans, but I was the best dressed person there. They let in EVERYONE... there were like 200 daddy yankee clones, the girls were fat and busted, and of the cute girls, about half were dressed like retards. It wasnt even a 'cool' Daddy yankee crowd...I definitly felt sorry for the ladies.... My bartender was super nice and sexy BUT the drinks were measured and in a small plastic cup AND mad expensive. Friday nights is a dorkfest at COPA!!

So much fun. Decided to check this place out on Tuesday with my boyfriend and some friends. It was more fun than I imagined. They have free dance lessons from 6-8. The dance floor is huge!! The people there are very friendly, and don't get upset when you accidently bump into them. They are also friendly and offer some dance tips. We had one incident with arude waiter on the floor, but the bartenders were friendly! They also have a free buffet, which isn't half bad. The drink prices are a little expensive, but the drinks are good. I'm definitely going back!!

User review by lvlyjess1024. Well copa is a latin club. On Thursday ladies 18 and over can get in but on Sarurdays you must be 21 and over. Drinks are pretty expensive a Long Island is about $12. Admission is Ladies free on Friday depending on performances and males are $30. i f you go to the web site you can a reduce coupon. Which ladies will get in for $10 amd males for $20. Bathrooms are very clean and there is always good music I wouldn't stop dancing. The type of music the have is salsa, reggeaton, and HIP-HOP.

Tuesday Night Review. Print out a discount coupon on line and get in for 5 dollars. The place fills up but doens't get packed. Get there early and get free buffet, one plate (ticket), so for a five dollar meal, not bad. The drinks are a bit pricey, but that's expected. Downstairs around 7pm was free salsa lesson, then from 830pm-930pm downstairs are stand up comics, then downstairs is all hip/hop r/b music. Upstairs is a band and all salsa/marengue/bachata dancing. I like the upstairs because you could hear each other talk and I go to a latin place for latin music. Overall, it's the best place in the city for a night out on a tuesday.
