“This place is probably the only joint in the neighborhood with good atmosphere, but the drinks are way too expensive.”
“Strongly recommend it for meeting up with groups big and small, for nicely chosen wines, good beer (no taps, though), and well-made drinks.”
“great place to relax after class”
“My only fear is that people have discovered this bar for the great scene that it is!”
“They city has so money amazing chill bars, don't waste your time and money going to this one.”
CHECK YOUR RECEIPT!.
I came here with a few friends early in the evening on a weekday night.
I got there a little early and sat at the bar while I waited for everyone to get there. When they all arrived, I told the bartender, "I'll leave the tab open, but ONLY me, not for everyone in the group."
We all sat at a table and my friends ordered a few rounds, for which a waitress served us. I had one more drink, which I went up to the bartender to get, since I had a tab open. When we were leaving, the waitress presented a bill. Everyone paid her cash for the entire bill plus tip.
I said goodbye to everyone, they walked out of the bar, and I went to pay my tab. The bartender had charged me for ALL of our drinks. $200+ dollars. I said, "I specifically told you NOT to put all the drinks on my tab and also, they all already paid the waitress for their drinks!" He said, "Nope- they hung you out to dry." With a grin.
Um, no they didn't (nor would they ever). I went and got them (they were just down the block). After bringing them back into Black Door, they presented the receipt the waitress had given them showing that they'd already paid for all of their drinks, and after some nonsensical excuses, he put the money back on my credit card.
Never apologized, just had an annoyed look on his face because he'd been caught in a totally ididic scam- FAIL. Maybe that works on people who are wasted late on a Saturday night, but seriously? The gall of this dumb*ss!
Fantastic Bar in the middle of terribleness. Fantastic Bar in a boring terrible area. I like this place because the girls are cool and dance on tables. The scene is fun on thursday nights and I like to dance with chicas.
Great local spot. I enjoy my time there. Given that it is the only bar in my neighborhood, I am grateful that it is this one. Good crowd, decent drinks, perhaps a bit pricey, but pleasant all around.
good place to start. we started out the night at black door the other day, the staff is nice and the crowd seems like a good mix of ppl - a good ratio and more attractive than at most bars. i agree w/ the post below that it is on the pricey side - $6 for a bottle of bud light, $8 for a weak/watery vodka soda - for more or less a chill bar.
Would be cool but too expensive. This place is probably the only joint in the neighborhood with good atmosphere, but the drinks are way too expensive. It seems to be trying desperately to appeal at once to both hip and rich people, but most hip people can't afford $7 bottles (bottles!) of beer and $9 glasses of cheap red wine. I live in the neighborhood and would LOVE to be able to hang out here. It would be a place that I could grab a drink with a friend before going to dinner, or just hang out and catch up with a friend. But because of the high prices, I'll be spending that $9 on an entire bottle and holing up in my apartment. Maybe I'll try back later when I quit being cool and join the ranks on wall street.
Very happy with my experience!. I had a joint birthday party here last week and everything went as smoothly as we could have ever wanted. It was a great private space for a party. We had a big crowd of over 100 people and everyone fit comfortably in the space. The bartenders were great and you are able to play your own music - def. a plus! Securing the room was hassle free and there was no double booking of parties like a lot of places tend to do. I could not have been happier and would def. recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice but chill space to host a party.
Great chill bar!.
I've enjoyed going to the Black Door and it's sister bar, the Park Bar, for the past three years! The Black Door has a very simple yet eloquent decor with high tin-panel ceilings and a BEAUTIFUL back room that's great for throwing parties in!! It's characteristically dimly lit and has lots of candles spread throughout, which creates a nice, low-key vibe. The bar and cocktail staff are all MORE than competent, and they're friendly and have personality! The drinks are well-made and not overpriced! No "specialty drink" menu, but the wine by the glass selection always rocks and the champagnes by the bottle are very moderately priced!
Great for after-work or late-night or just chillin' any day of the week, and there's plenty of seating!
Credit Card Mischarge. This bar is completely horrifying. I should have read the other reviews before going. Not only are the drinks overpriced, but most disturbing is that they mischarged my credit card. When I brought this to the bartender's attention, he acted like it was my mistake and then realized that he just couldn't add. He said that he would fix it when finalizing it that evening, but low and behold the charge was wrong on my statement. I work in the service industry and I was even shocked by how poor the customer service was.
One of Flatiron's Finest After Work. Happy Hour in a cosy black light with solid service, good prices, and strong drinks make this a contender for best bar in the Flatiron area. Get here early or the place will be full by 6:30PM.
