What People Are Saying About Black Door

The Scene – Located in that nebulous area between the bustle of 34th Street and the beautiful-people bars of Chelsea, Black Door is just as comfortably low-key as its tiny sister bar, Union Square's Park Bar. High tin ceilings and dark wood wainscoting are warmed up by votives on every table--and an abundance of stools prevent that uncomfortable standing-with-a-martini posture. Small amenities, such as hooks everywhere to hang up coats, encourage you to stay a while. – – The Draw – The owners aim for zero attitude, and they succeed. Friendly waitresses dispense bowls…

CHECK YOUR RECEIPT!

by blackdoorsucks

I came here with a few friends early in the evening on a weekday night.

I got there a little early and sat at the bar while I waited for everyone to get there. When they all arrived, I told the bartender, "I'll leave the tab open, but ONLY me, not for everyone in the group."

We all sat at a table and my friends ordered a few rounds, for which a waitress served us. I had one more drink, which I went up to the bartender to get, since I had a tab open. When we were leaving, the waitress presented a bill. Everyone paid her cash for the entire bill plus tip.

I said goodbye to everyone, they walked out of the bar, and I went to pay my tab. The bartender had charged me for ALL of our drinks. $200+ dollars. I said, "I specifically told you NOT to put all the drinks on my tab and also, they all already paid the waitress for their drinks!" He said, "Nope- they hung you out to dry." With a grin.

Um, no they didn't (nor would they ever). I went and got them (they were just down the block). After bringing them back into Black Door, they presented the receipt the waitress had given them showing that they'd already paid for all of their drinks, and after some nonsensical excuses, he put the money back on my credit card.

Never apologized, just had an annoyed look on his face because he'd been caught in a totally ididic scam- FAIL. Maybe that works on people who are wasted late on a Saturday night, but seriously? The gall of this dumb*ss!

good place to start

by joehoya

we started out the night at black door the other day, the staff is nice and the crowd seems like a good mix of ppl - a good ratio and more attractive than at most bars. i agree w/ the post below that it is on the pricey side - $6 for a bottle of bud light, $8 for a weak/watery vodka soda - for more or less a chill bar.

  • Pros: good bartender, good crowd
  • Cons: weak drinks, no draft beer

Would be cool but too expensive

by phattums

This place is probably the only joint in the neighborhood with good atmosphere, but the drinks are way too expensive. It seems to be trying desperately to appeal at once to both hip and rich people, but most hip people can't afford $7 bottles (bottles!) of beer and $9 glasses of cheap red wine. I live in the neighborhood and would LOVE to be able to hang out here. It would be a place that I could grab a drink with a friend before going to dinner, or just hang out and catch up with a friend. But because of the high prices, I'll be spending that $9 on an entire bottle and holing up in my apartment. Maybe I'll try back later when I quit being cool and join the ranks on wall street.

  • Pros: great atmosphere, only cool place around
  • Cons: way too expensive (they need to realize who their audience really is)
