The Scene
Diners flock here for Italian comfort food, shabby-chic decor and a mellow East Village crowd. The double-sided, two-storied space begins with a bar-wrapped open kitchen and proceeds from one cozy, candlelit nook to the next. A brick-walled back room with farmhouse tables seats large parties, while subterranean pillow-strewn banquettes appeal to romantics. Unfortunately, stiff hosts and indifferent servers can crush the feel-good vibe.

The Food
Chef-owner Frank Prisinazo's fresh, rustic fare satisfies the soul and the wallet. Start with addictive chicken liver or cheesy stracchino crostini on chewy Sullivan Street bread. Homemade pastas with meaty bolognese or wild-mushroom ragu are simple pleasures, but weekly rotating too-soft risottos, such as sweet pear-Gorgonzola, are hit-or-miss. Favorites include moist, herb-stuffed whole fish and oven-roasted pork loin with crispy potatoes and mixed greens. Skip the pedestrian cheese plate and end the evening with chocolate-doused hazelnut panna cotta instead.

I have been wanting to go to Supper for a long time but since it's not that easy to get to I have been putting it off. What a mistake - it is so worth a cab ride or walk to get to. We went a little before 8 and were told to wait in the bar next door - the bartender could not have been nicer - the wine was excellent and we had a little appetizer before going to the main restaurant. Supper is lively, so cozy with brick walls, tin ceilings and velvet curtains, and I would like to have the lemon spaghetti every day of my life. I will be bringing everyone I know here from now on - the service was excellent and the food even better. I can't imagine having anything bad to say about Supper - it's perfect!!!

This place is always pretty croweded for dinner so you have to wait at the adjoining bar which is usually not a problem but I was injured and had no where to sit for the 30 min wait and was obviously injured and nobody gave me their seat. The people can be kind of snooty... THe food there is amazing. It is better to go there than get home deliviery. Also, one of the best places I have been in the city for brunch. The french toast is AMAZING.

I planned a dinner for 12 at Supper for a Saturday night at 7pm. At 7pm, 3 of our party had not yet arrived, but at 7:05, the hostess seated us anyway which I thought was really nice considering they are very explicit about their 10 minute table hold policy. But maybe they knew we respected their policy when we had our guests arrive at 6:45 for the 7:00 reservation. Anyway, we were promptly guided from the bar next door to the basement dining room, back up the stairs to the main restaurant, to the rear dining room...2 friends and I were at the tail end and when we turned the corner in the reare dining room and didn't see the rest of our party we were really baffled. We were then told that our party was beyond the wine cellar. I've been to Supper before, but never knew they had a back room and this huge, beautiful wine cellar. We walked through the wine cellar and through this door in a BEAUTIFUL private room. It was like a dining room set like none possible in an old tenement building. There was a beautiful long dark wood table for 12, 2 gorgeous chandeliers, damask wall-paper, a little bar, and our very own bathroom!!! We were served right away. Our server was the most patient- we were a cackling group of 12 women excited about celebrating our friend's bachelorette party. The busboys were awesome, efficient and well-mannered. AND the FOOD was awesome. Several bottles of wine, appetizers to share for the entire table, entrees for everyone and our bill plus gratuity (they didn't tack on gratuity!) was about $50 per person. This was a bargain! We felt so lucky and special to have been dining in this beautiful room they put us in. It is truly the perfect place for a private, special dinner party!!!!

The Details on Supper

Know Before You Go:

Supper only takes reservations for parties of 10 or more. The velvet-draped, tin-ceiling bar, therefore, is the most popular spot in the house. Get on the list and grab a glass of wine.

Look Good:

In addition to a dozen inexpensive wines by the glass, 10 bottles are sold "by consumption," which means if you drink one glass, you only pay a fourth of the bottle price.
