What People Are Saying About Shula's Steak House

In Short – Enormous black-and-white photographs depicting the legendary coach's undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphin season line the mahogany walls. The menu, printed on an actual football, features typical steakhouse fare. Starters range from creamy spinach to Caesar salad to oysters Rockefeller. Cooked-to-order fish, such as salmon, snapper and even dolphin (get it?), are partnered with beurre blanc. Steaks, delivered with a ceremonial flashlight inspection, include a 24-ounce porterhouse, a Kansas City sirloin and a "Cowboy Rib-eye."

Editor's Tips

Save Money:
If you're heading to a show, the early-bird menu is a steal: Between 5pm and 6:30pm, choose one of three appetizers, entrees and desserts for $50 (wine not included).
What to Drink:
The down-to-earth wine list is stocked with values. The Alexander Valley Cabernet is a wonderful match for the meal.
Parking:
Shula's diners get a big parking discount--$16 for the whole night. Pull up on the left end of 38th Street, just before 8th Avenue, for the valet.

  15. The food was EXTREMELY OVERPRICED for the quality (e.g., their $16.95 "Colossal Shrimp Cocktail" consisted of 5 medium-sized shrimp thrown onto a salad plate), and as another reviewer mentioned, we also disliked a football being placed directly on our din
  16. Our service was excellent and we spent a relaxing, unhurried evening enjoying an excellent meal.

  1. think the cart display may slow the waitstaff down a bit as it is time consuming- it is a nice touch but should perhaps be optional or upon request.
  2. The service was slow and they did not have a lot of choices for the ala carte potato and veggie.
  3. Service was a little slow which was a bit nerve wracking as we were pre-theater but in the end we walked out with time to spare.

Great Hidden Steakhouse

by NYFoodie1

I went to Shula's this weekend for a show and had a great experience. It was a bit hard to find as its in the Westin hotel and has a small door on the street level to get in. It was rather busy but the service was still attentive. I ordered the cowboy steak and it was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. The lobster bisque was delicious too. The winelist was priced well with some good steakhouse selections. Didn't have room for dessert but I will definitely be back soon!!

Wonderful experience

by kayelam

I surprised my husband with a trip to NY for his birthday. I chose Shula's for his dinner because he'd eaten at one in Chicago and had "the best steak he'd ever eaten". We arrived a little early for our reservation and were promptly seated. The service was impeccable and the food delicious. They acknowledged his birthday and even called the following day to see how our experience had been. We will definitely return.

  • Pros: great for special occasion
  • Cons: none

Steak and a pigskin

by patmccroch

Ok, it was a little odd to have them put an autographed football on our table with the list of beef written on it. Thankfully that was just for show :). the reall menu's followed shortly there after.

My wife had the filet and I had the Kansas city (new york cut with bone), and both were delicous. The 22oz Kansas city was cooked perfect and had great flavor, one of my favorite cuts and hard to find. The twice baked potato was flavorful and the broccoli was perfectly cooked. The bbq shrimp w/bacon was marginal.

Slightly overpriced, but with in reason still.

All in all, a great experience. George the busser really saved the day for our waitress, she should count herself lucky to have such a great assistant.

  • Pros: Steak, Ambience, George the Busser
  • Cons: Slightly overpriced

A meat lovers great evening!

by jcostin

My wife and I, from Houston, and another couple from Conneticut were visiting Manhattan for the weekend and I chose Shula's for dinner because I had heard that it was a good steak house. I can honestly say that we had one of the best meals we have had in years. We have some outstanding steak places in Houston and Shula's in Manhattan would give any of them a run for their money. Our service was excellent and we spent a relaxing, unhurried evening enjoying an excellent meal. Some of the other reviewers mentioned that they didn't appreciate a football on the table. We all thought it was a clever gimmick and entirely appropriate in this restaurant (if you want fast and boring...go to Out***k).

  • Pros: ambience, service
  • Cons: prices, limited side menu
