Editorial Review for Stella McCartney – by Melissa Kirsch

The Scene
McCartney's first boutique is a study in pastels and mirrors. Mannequins greet the clientele from a shallow reflecting pool, and walls are adorned with sculptured tile shaped like daisies. The music is low and the cut flowers are romantically wilting as moguls on cell phones seal deals on understated sofas while their wives get the royal treatment from the efficient, if aloof, sales staff.

The Goods
Ultra-feminine silks and cashmere, frills and ribbons are mixed with a dose of street toughness: a tulle skirt gets an industrial zipper, or a pair of tailored pants is revamped with beads that resemble chain mail. True to her mother's favorite cause, none of Stella's designs use animal products, including the shoes (she uses a plant derivative you'd swear was leather). Getting outfitted by the same gal who dresses Madonna and Gwyneth doesn't come cheap, however--even the end-of-collection sale prices are expensive.

In one word - fabulous. Stella's store, conveniently located on 14th St. between 9th & 10th Aves. positioned in between Jeffrey and Alexander McQueen is such a treasure. Stella's penchant for feminine, floaty, cutting edge designs is clearly apparent at this great spot, not to mention the fact that you'll see Stella's pieces all over Vogue, Bazaar, etc. Staff is super friendly and go out of their way to help. A skirt that I bought here and loved ripped, so the store happily took it back, repaired it at no cost, and returned it to me. Great service, amazing designs (although high price tags) -- definitely check this place out.

Pros: Amazing designs, Great store aesthetic, Friendly staff

Cons: Out of the way locale, High prices
