What People Are Saying About Matsugen

The Scene – Even the most polite conversationalists will find their eyes wandering, as a parade of notable names makes its way past the long communal table toward the more exclusive dining room in the rear. It's clear that, from the urban-esque soundtrack--ABBA, Destiny's Child--to Richard Meier's understated, sleek interior, the place is meant to attract as many hipsters as gastronomes. – – The Food – For the most part, it's solid, sometimes impressive Chinese: One can easily find better pork buns and Peking duck in Chinatown, but then you'd have to settle for dining…

Editor's Tips

What to Drink:
The house cocktails are inspired, especially the Ginger Marja-Rita, made with Sauza Tres Anejo, lime and fresh ginger, and rimmed with ginger salt, and the Mother of Pearl, with rum and fresh coconut milk.
Where to Sit:
Reservations must be made far in advance (sometimes weeks) for tables in the main dining rooms. But it's equally fun to sit at the communal table, which is set aside for walk-ins. Get there before 9pm, when the crowds start to gather.

  13. great food, very attentive service and non intrusive, good music and a very minimalistic decor, felt like i was in a CK store
  14. Deceptively flattering lighting and simple, yet elegant decor, and overbearing waitstaff - I got harassed for switching my seat at the same table!
  15. The atmosphere is nice, but not all that - NY has a million better restaurants.
  16. Nice restaurant, I liked the decor a lot.
  17. ... ok, ambiance is nice, staff can be friendly, except the french yahoo at the door.

food quality
72.12999820709229% positive
  1. The food was excellent.
  2. 66 gets a really bad rap (too expensive for Chinese, poor service, etc), but I've dined there 6 times in 2 years and I've always been impressed by the food.
  3. The best thing on the menu is sushi/sashimi it is so fresh that it seems to melt in your mouth like butter!
  4. Desserts were delicious however pass on the ovaltine pudding.
  5. Of the entrees we had, I would recommend the steamed cod and the sliced steak dish.
  6. On our way out, we complained to the maitre d about the food and even she agreed that there are much better places that we can go to for delicious chinese food.
  7. The cold sesame noodle dish was pretty good, but everything else we ordered, dumplings with foie gras, lemon chicken, and beef were all really disappointing.
  8. The bok choy was barely seasoned, and the salmon entree was just plain weird.
  9. The food at Lozoo is delicious (and authentic) and also offers the calming atmosphere and post modern decor of 66, if that is what you are looking for.
  10. Does anyone else see similarities with the trendy but god awful food of Mercer Kitchen.

  16. We also had an amazing veggie fried rice.
  17. The chicken was repulsive, the fish was decent, but i could have gotten a much better meal if i had ordered from my local chinese restuarant.
  18. The dishes were good and the rice is a must, but I have to say that I like the food at Mr. Chow a little better.
  19. Some friends of mine who live in the neighborhood say it's the best Chinese food they've ever had!
  20. Clean, dynamic, and refreshing inspired dishes made my dinner a memorable one.
  21. who seemed honestly offended that we asked why our table was 45 minutes late; a cold cafeteria room that was clearly designed to intimidate; and "haute chinese" food that was over-salted to make up for the lack of flavor.
  22. Had a great meal, amazing service and the scene was awesome.
  23. Our waiter was great, but that is no reason to spend $100 per head on a lousy meal.
  24. Avoid the cold noodles, the tuna tartar, the frog leg's, the peking chicken was not so bad.
  25. The food looks great but the flavors are missing.
  26. went with another famous chef from Paris and we recieved the royal treatment sampling almost half the menu, and everything was fresh, original and succulent- especially the foie gras dumplings, mayonnaise/milky shrimp, and this shrimp, walnut, oinion an

  33. definately recommend the shrimp toast and dumplings.
  34. we were in haven from appetizers, my favorite was the tuna tartare, to the dim sum,the best was shrimp and foie gras dumpling, and i could go on and on, everything was an explosion of flavors.
  35. Truth is, I wish we had gone to New York Noodle Town in Chinatown for some really delicious food at a third the price.
  36. the cold sesame noodles were a nice start too.
  37. Nothing we ordered from the menu was appetizing (shrimp hargow dimsum, corn and crab soup, sirloin, bass, pot stickers), and for the most part was served luke warm.

  48. the ambience of the place was nice but the food was def.
  49. Like the foie gras & shrimp dumpling (over powered by the flavor of citrus rind) or the Short ribs with a depp rich sauce that was devoid of any flavor.
  50. White rice was the best dish.
  51. 66 has great food and some good drinks, but the desserts are lacking.
  52. note - those looking for authentic chinese cusine will be sorely disappointed.
  53. Jean-Georges sent out way too many to count, but we shared all the dishes, and the bill was utterly reasonable.

  56. The atmosphere was very chic, and the food was delicious.
  57. loves the noodles and the cookie box and coconut sorbet!
  58. wasn't expecting great food but this was much worse than what i had imagined.
  59. Yes, if you love Chinese food in its slop portion style, than obviously you should head to Chinatown or the local Chinese dive, but if you want to experience Chinese in a whole new way, this is the place!

  68. Ambiance with good food!
  69. The pork belly stood out as the favorite, but the sesame noodles, dumplings and others were all good too.
  70. It's this simple: the food was good, some dishes very good.
  71. Overall, obviously I would say to avoid 66 at all costs, unless you want some of the worst food and service you can get so you can feel better about going to McDonald's.
  72. They present nicely and the family style food that arrives in particular order is fun (if you know that's the routine here) But none of the flavors pop.
  73. The seafood, such as bass and shrimp, is great, but the dim sum was below average and the meats and desserts inedible.
  74. The crispy tofu turned out to be heavy, donut-like fried balls of batter with tofu in the middle and a sauce that may as well come out of a bottle.
  75. food was great with exception of a few dishes which were just good.
  76. did not find the food impressive in any way, shape or form.

Bad soba, not for people who know Japanese food

by livewithstyle at Citysearch

Matsugen was formerly "66" restaurant, another Jean-Georges attempt at upscale Asian cuisine. I ate here for restaurant week dinner and it was nearly empty - I guess everyone else already knew what I was about to find out. Let me preface this with I've been to Japan and am very familiar with its cuisine, my date is Japanese and lived in Tokyo for 20 years.

I do admit that some of the items were rather good such as the soft tofu appetizer, tempura and the miso cod - but no one goes here for this, its about the soba right? (more about that later) The tuna sushi and seaweed salad were ok, but nothing special. The green tea pudding dessert was also OK but it had more of a liquid consistency closer to a thick soup.

On the other hand the edamame was covered in too much pepper which made it unusual and nearly too spicy to enjoy. The attractive teapot holding the green tea hid a tea bag of questionable quality which produced green colored water with no flavor. At first I thought it had not been steeped long enough, but it did not improve with time. The worst green tea I have ever been served.

My primary issue with the food was with the soba, which is supposed to be the specialty and the main reason for going here. The hot soba with duck was just fair, much better can be had many other places. The cold soba tasted raw enough in the middle that we both thought they made a mistake in preparing it. After sending it back for another bowl which was the same, we pushed it aside and left it uneaten. We asked the waiter, when we could find him later, about this and he said many people like this style. After explaining that we are familiar with soba and Japanese cuisine he conceded that this was more of a Korean style preparation. If I wanted Korean style noodles I would have gone to K-town and not searched out a Japanese Soba restaurant.

Basically, Matsugen failed to deliver soba to justify its claim as an upscale soba specialty restaurant or warrant its prices, and overall its just not that great of a Japanese restaurant. I cannot think of a reason to recommend Matsugen considering the better alternatives at more reasonable prices.

Also, if you dined at "66" the décor is EXACTLY the same down to the tables, chairs and fish tank, the only thing that changed is the banners above the sushi bar and the menu.

  • Pros: Close to the Franklin Street Subway
  • Cons: Bad Soba - Overpriced, inauthentic food

terrible service and mediocre food, not worth the price

by yeedc at Citysearch

the service was awful: despite a computerized system, the host failed to register that we arrived until we had to remind them after 30 min; our sake flights took at least 30 min to arrive; another couple also had problems with their orders (e.g. soup didn't arrive, etc).... the soba is good but not great. there are excellent small japanese restaurants specializing in soba around st. marks square for the same price range, with service 10x better. on a positive note, we did receive a complimentary dessert b/c of complaints about the service and miscommunication between wait staff/kitchen/bar. but the service just left a bitter after taste

  • Pros: cool atmosphere if you like the generic, minimalist design that most restaurants like to copy
  • Cons: service, food is sub-par or average considering the price
