The Scene – Not since the early '80s has Soho seen so much pink neon. The garish glow (intensified by mirrored ceilings, walls and floors) begins at the long bar and extends under chintz banquettes and white plastic chairs, past a gigantic gold Buddha, to the bustling open kitchen. Droves of downtown hipsters keep indefatigable servers running for pastel-colored cocktails. – – The Food – The towering stacks of Thai food, swathed with colorful sauce swirls and orchid garnishes, taste as good as they look, and are surprisingly inexpensive. NEVER AGAIN

by Morgan560 at Citysearch

OK, I have been to Peep several times and have always enjoyed the food and drink...

Last night I went there with a friend who endured a long (crazy long) travel day. We arrived on a Thursday night at 10:15 and were quickly told the kitchen is closing soon and we had about an hour.. No problem, Thai is quick.

As soon as we sat down we were asked several times if we knew what we wanted.. We kept asking for a minute as we didnt even get to open the menu. We order drinks. Julies drink seemed perfect (looked fruity), my drink came wrong... No damage so we moved on..

We order. Appetizer comes in like four minutes.. Uhg.. We eat. Entree comes literally 3 minutes once we finish appetizer. Total time in place was like 25 mins at this point.

So.... We start eating and we are told the bartender wants to go home... OK, I am seeing this movie and already know the ending. We order another round. For the SECOND time I tell them "No Lime". Julie's drink came correct but she even told me (almost bet me) that they would mess it up.. Well... THERE WAS A DAMN LIME.. Dude, I hate lime. No, I detest lime. As soon as the drink was on the table I removed the lime from the tainted drink and plunked it in the water glass. I wish the splash landed on the waiter.....

OK so we are finishing our drink and than the waiter tells us we have to leave as they want to close.... I was like what???? We were 86thd. Anyhow I couldn't believe it. I mean we were like rushed in and out...

Sadly the food was good but I cant get past the crappy service.... If I were with one of my usual suspects I wouldn't have left but I was cool about it. Sadly I gave a 20% tip (looked at receipt this am). Why??

Anyway, good food and sh&#ty service results in the famous.... "Lifetime Ban"

  • Pros: ?????
  • Cons: Rude Staff, Bartender that doesn't listen...

Face towel noodle = best thing ever.

by MeredithM at Citysearch

Peep has one of the best lunch specials I've found in the city. For $7 you can get an appetizer of dumplings, or salad, or one of their other many yummy bites, and then an entree of curry or noodles with your choice of protein. You may laugh at the name, but try the face towel noodle. It is addictive. It is delicious. I miss it enormously now that I work in midtown! Seriously, I don't know how they make the face towel noodle sauce but I have to eat it with chopsticks just to make it last longer. The face towel noodle is also available for dinner, when it is served with shellfish. They are very flexible to dietary needs though -- just tell them if you only want chicken, or tofu, or don't want egg.

Peep also has good if slightly expensive cocktails -- like a strawberry mojito-type drink.

  • Pros: Face towel noodle
  • Cons: Dark bathrooms

The Details on Peep

Look Good:

From the bathrooms, visitors get full view of the dining room through one-way mirrors. Beware: Diners can see through the walls well enough to see the TVs over the sinks.

What to Drink:

Wines by the glass are meagerly poured, and cocktails are overly sweet. Opt for a bottle, like spicy red Feudi Monaci Primitivo from southern Italy ($23), from the short, smart list.

Where to Sit:

If pink neon isn't your color, call ahead and request a table toward the back.
