Editorial Review for The Donut Pub – by Allison Austin
The Scene
Inside, there's not much to look at, just the usual Formica tables, bar stools and chairs in back and standard doughnut displays up front. The most interesting thing about the place is its history: Originally opened in 1964 and closed in 2002 for renovations, the Pub has been a neighborhood gathering place for generations. Friendly counter help will box a dozen doughnuts for takeout, or in engage in a little conversation at the counter in back.
The Food
The doughnuts are soft, light and made fresh all day long. The best choices are the lemon- or jelly-filled, though the classic cake doughnut is just about perfect for dipping into coffee; the crullers are on the eggy side. You can get a better plain glazed elsewhere, but you won't find a better apple fritter or cinnamon-sugar twist. There's also a good selection of muffins from which to choose.
