The Scene
On a block that's pretty much dead come sundown, this second-floor Chelsea theater proves unexpectedly lively. Nightly, the oddly shaped, white-walled lobby and adjoining 40-seat black-box theater fills with energetic 20-somethings eager to learn and watch the fine art of instantaneous comedy. With a tech booth placed in full view of the raked audience, lights and sounds are more than supporting elements; they're often part of the show.
The Draw
Having worked extensively with the late improv guru Del Close and co-founded the seminal troupe Upright Citizens Brigade, the singularly named Ali has been able to attract talented, inventive troupes and an impressive staff whose credits include "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and the HBO Aspen U.S. Comedy Festival. Shows take place most nights of the week; call for a schedule.

Cozy is rarely a word used in the context of comedy theaters...but that's what the PIT is...a warm, cozy space where you can watch up and coming performers...and maybe even get up there yourself!
