Something you can't find anywhere else
by musicgal62485
I am a devoted client at Beyond Pilates and a client of Ed’s since 2001. I say that because it sounds like the reviews below are bargain shoppers making snap judgements. I continue to go to classes and sessions because I see major differences when I don’t. I’ve tried taking breaks from time to time, but I am nowhere near as toned as when I regularly attend classes. Those of us who attend on a regular basis do so because they are doing something different at Beyond Pilates. This thing about fixing muscle imbalances is something you can’t find anywhere else. And, I know from my own work the many challenges faced by anybody with the courage to run a small business in these difficult times. It’s not easy, and I think they’re doing a great job!
Horrible experience
by Yaye
This place is a scam. I started at Beyond after buying a coupon and then bought 10 classes with them. The mat classes were canceled several times. During two weeks there were no classes, one time because the teacher was sick and they didn't have a back up teacher, the second time "because it's fashion week". You need to give them 3 slots during the week, but they can't manage to suit everybody so it's a big mess, a lot of back and forth emails. I complained and ask for a refund, the customer service is awful. They refused to reimburse me and now they don't even reply to my messages.
There are so many great Pilates studio in the city, don't go there.
Terrible Experience

While I understand that everyone else loves this place, I unfortunately do not. I got to experience one of the trainers leaving in tears after a less than appropriate interaction with Ed. He may want to stick to training and leave running a business to others, he was completely out of line.
MAT is Great!
by rgreen28
I have been working on a weekly basis for more than a year with Ed Morand on Muscle Activation Technique, and my progress has been nothing short of miraculous!
I am 82 years old, and for almost 5 years have had severe pain in the sciatica nerve in my left leg, which made it almost impossible for me to walk more than a couple of blocks. Walking - swift walking - had been a major source of exercise and fitness for me, and the inability to continue this was devastating.
I was examined for this problem by doctors at Roosevelt, Mt. Sinai and St. Vincents Hospitals, and they each recommended cortisone injections in the nerve and if that failed, neuro-surgery. I recoiled at the idea of invasive medicine, preferring to "live with" the pain - until my personal trainer sent me to MAT. Ed's mastery of muscular activation technique has so effectively reduced my pain that now I feel it primarily when I stand for too long, but otherwise have little or no difficulty in walking substantial distances - at a fast pace. T ensure that I do not slip back into my previous "bad habits," Ed has prescribed a series of "low-stress" exercises which I do in bed each morning for 15 minutes. I continue to see him - now bi-weekly - as he delves deeper into the causes of the pain and the ways to alleviate it, as well as to achieve a better muscular balance in general.
I have recommended Ed to a number of my friends suffering from otherwise intractable pain, and will continue to do so. I am truly grateful for this work.
whittled me down to shape for my wedding—and then some!
by ECB8
so, I rarely ever leave reviews... but I've had such a positive experience at Beyond that I had to share. I started going to the studio when I wanted to tone up for my wedding. That was in 2008 (yes, two years ago). I've been a loyal customer since! my instructor at Beyond Pilates didn't just help me tone up for the wedding, she also taught me postural techniques, how to breathe better (yes, there are different ways of breathing), and how to prevent injuries to my problematic back. the staff at this studio are professional—I can always email the owner re scheduling and expect a reply within the hour, talented, and know their stuff. I am also a clean freak and the studio is SPOTLESS, which I find really important! the changing area is a good size and the space never feels too busy or cramped. I've recommended several friends to the studio and now they're all addicted too! highly recommend it!
- Pros: close to subway, very clean, friendly
