We happened upon Pete's accidentally. We dropped in another of Pete's restaurants, on Colfax, a Diner that serves Gyro meat with omelettes, breakfasts, and other goodies. When I asked for a more Mediterranean-Greek restaurant, the hostess told me about Pete's Central, and gave me directions there. When we walked in, the manager asked if we had come from the other restaurant and welcomed us. The hostess had phoned him to be on alert for us. Coming from a family who owned restaurants, I have to say that impressed me even more than the food. Then, of course there was the food! We sampled the Spanakopita, a unique presentation using puff pastry rather than phyllo dough. It was lighter and flaky, correctly seasoned and herbed with mint and onions, and with luscious melted bits of feta. Our Athenian Combination (Gyro Meat, Souvlaki, and Dolmades) came with soup and a small greek salad. The lemon-chicken soup was nicely flavored and the greek salad was wonderful, the olives oil-cured and rich, the dressing light and lime-ey, and the veggies fresh. The Gyro meat was tender and rich, served with pita and tstatsiki and sweet onions. The Souvlaki was perfectly grilled, with sweet grilled tomatoes (Heaven!) red onions and green peppers. The Dolmades were unlike any I'd ever had. Their rice and beef stuffing was perfectly seasoned, the grape leaves soft yet piquant... Then they were sauteed and topped with a creamy lemon sauce... They were indescribebably wonderful. We finished with the Galactoburico: Rich vanilla custard in phyllo dough topped with simple syrup and cinnamon. The insanely rich and sweet flavor was indeed complimented with free Ouzo shots courtesy of the manager. We have returned several times, bringing friends and relatives, each of whom have raved about Pete's food and service. We have met two waitresses, both of whom have gone above and beyond the call of duty, and remembered us each time. We look forward to out next visit! OPA!!!
Pros: Fabulous, Authentic Food, served by people who are proud to do so!
Cons: It's not closer to my home!
