The Scene
An elevated row of chairs by Frank Gehry, Ron Arad and other noted designers lies in your immediate line of view as you enter this contemporary gallery. Tables piled with design books sit in the middle of the room, and miniature chairs in mounted lucite cylinders hang on the right. White walls downstairs create a backdrop for funky, colorful furniture, while black-and-white photos of more furniture create a picture-in-picture effect.
The Goods
The only thing better than wandering among bright, modern works of art is the knowledge that these pieces can be purchased. From ply tables by Jasper Morrison to seating by Maarten van Severen, the unique emphasis on smooth curves and sharp angles demonstrates a shift from the traditional. Verner Panton chairs beckon to home decorators with their vibrant fabrics.

It's a store! It's a museum! Stop, you're both right! The Vitra store may look like a museum, but it's filled with friendly, helpful, and superknowledgeable salespeople who don't reprimand you for touching (or sitting on) the art--in fact, they encourage it. This is the kind of wonderful store that makes you want to throw out all of your possessions (especially that gooey brown sofa you found on the street), repaint your apartment (something from Mondrian's pallette, perhaps), and fill your living space (you can call it that now) with gorgeous designer pieces from the likes of Eames, Starck, and Prouve. Go for it.

So excited to stumble across this new store. Amazing modern furniture, and it's nice to be able to actually sit in/on the stuff (unlike MOMA or moss, where you can look, but not touch). Small but nice selection of design books too. If you go on a weekend you can park nearby and have brunch in the neighborhood.
Pros: great furniture, easy parking, hot neighborhood
Cons: not cheap
