The Scene
Gone is the trademark grungy trudge upstairs. This Chinatown staple for more than 30 years, has headed upstream in a bold and fashionable move to Soho. Here you'll find more or less the same items at the same prices, but the main-drag space beckons more tourists, more photo stylists and more tabletop freaks than ever. And the cleaner, brighter store makes it easier to muster some patience and dig for deals.
The Goods
You can take the store out of Chinatown, but you can't take Chinatown out of the store. While Soho's shoppers flock for bamboo blinds, paper lanterns, beaded slippers, elegant teapots and gift-worthy chopstick-and-rice-bowl sets, many imported goods in the herbal remedies and edibles departments retain a bizarre mystique of unfathomable usage. Asian cookware is a strength, as is party decor and adorable babywear. Despite its mandarin-collared jackets and flowered ceramic plates being featured in glossy magazines, most prices hover reasonably low.
