The swank spin-off of Steve Hanson's popular Park Avenue cantina is a Soho hipster haven. The downtown digs look familiar, with a brushed-tin bar leading into a prime people-watching patio, and a booth-lined dining room with high skylights, geometric cut-out screens and antiqued mirrors. The vibe is younger and edgier, but its buzz can be its bane: Diners shout over music, and service can be over-taxed . The upscale Mexican menu wows crowds with innovative ingredients and showy good looks. Mashed-to-order guacamole and hand-rolled tacos, stuffed with grilled jumbo shrimp and served with three…

Editor's Tips

The Extras:
The restaurant accommodates parties of 18 in its dining room. Private rooms for larger parties are also available.
What to Drink:
The more than 100 tequilas are showcased on a well-organized list, with adjective-heavy descriptions. Sample them on their own with a traditional tomato-citrus chaser called a sagrita, or stick to the downright delicious margaritas. The prickly pear version is DC's signature cocktail.

  1. watched the couple next to me do lines of coke on the table in full view of the staff.
  2. Great ambiance, great staff, great location, great presentation and selection and most of all, everything tasted wonderful!
  3. it is a nice location for outside fun.
  4. They have a great location if you like a mouth full of soot from the passing trucks.
  5. Great GUACAMOLE, fun drinks, excellent main courses.
  6. Usually there is a trade-off when you pay high prices for so-so food (i.e. atttentive service, great atmosphere, etc).
  7. The waitress was also very good, Nice atmosphere, candles made a good ambiance.
  8. the margaritas and guacomole are wonderful, and are a real draw to this place, also nice ambiance, but all the entrees ive tried, the chicken, the tacos, the fish, were all just ok to good.
  9. Trendy scene and wonderful location.
dessert

  1. At the end of the meal, we were brought coffee full of grounds and 'floating' crumbs and something the manager described as 'curdled heavy whipping cream' to lighten it with.
  2. recommend the snapper ceviche and the seabass and for dessert the warm chocolate empanada.
drinks

  1. They have a bar where they make the guacamole - awesome.
  2. Don't eat here, just order a few drinks at the bar.
  3. Our food was cold (not to mention mediocre at best), and the complimentary drinks that are part of the meal were added to our check along with the appeziter that we never got.
  4. We were served warm beer and when we asked for cold ones the waitress acted like we were prudes.
  5. Great food & drinks, but had very bad server
  6. The drinks are overpriced and small!
  7. At the end of the meal, we were brought coffee full of grounds and 'floating' crumbs and something the manager described as 'curdled heavy whipping cream' to lighten it with.
  8. Great GUACAMOLE, fun drinks, excellent main courses.
  9. Great food, great drinks, great scene!
  10. will drink warm beer but not when they are $8 a piece.
  11. Typical of NY restaurants, the tab will soar when you order several drinks.
  12. with the good food and excellent drink menu, you might need it.
  13. He sent our watress over with fresh coffee and the standard creamer and she delivered it with an astringent 'Let's see how THIS works for you!'
food quality
77.47000217437744% positive
  1. The food was really bad and EXPENSIVE!
  2. Although the restaurant was full, she took the time to answer our questions about their extensive teqila list, never rushed us, and at the end of the meal took the time to talk about some of the other BR Guest restaurants that my friends from out of town
  3. The food was no better than a run-of-the-mill Burritoville, the portions are tiny, and the prices are abominable (and i spend a great deal on food)
  4. The food is amazing!
  5. the margaritas and guacomole are wonderful, and are a real draw to this place, also nice ambiance, but all the entrees ive tried, the chicken, the tacos, the fish, were all just ok to good.
  6. Great food, great drinks, great scene!
  7. The salad was flavorful and quite nice; however, we could only find two pieces of goat cheese in the entire salad.
  8. Usually there is a trade-off when you pay high prices for so-so food (i.e. atttentive service, great atmosphere, etc).
  9. He sent our watress over with fresh coffee and the standard creamer and she delivered it with an astringent 'Let's see how THIS works for you!'
  10. They Rip You Off -- and I don't just mean with the mediocre food
  11. with the good food and excellent drink menu, you might need it.
  12. take that back; order some guac, grab a margarita or two, and then go elsewhere for some real food.
  13. The food was great, the guac is not to be believed simply perfect and the chips are standard good fare.
  14. Make sure to share an order with at least one person, otherwise you WILL consume the entire thing; and you should save room for the awesome entrees, especially the grilled fish selections -- yum!
  15. If you feel that the blatantly careless service and disgergard for cleanliness standards would detract from your enjoyment of the fabulous food, avoid this place.
  16. The food was great.
  17. Great food & drinks, but had very bad server
  18. But besides all that, the food was delicous, the staff are friendly and professional and the margarita's are to die for!
  19. The guac is great and compares to Rosa Mexicano and the dishes are good.
  20. the ribeye steak is amazing!
  21. All their dishes were good (taste wise), but you can tell it was rushed.
  22. Our food arrived in reasonable time - the guacamole was very good and the tacos were ok - nothing to write home about.
  23. All the food was delicious.
  24. Finally great Mexican food in New York!
  25. The tequila selection is very extensive and the margaritas were tasty.
  26. The swordfish was delicious and the spiced up guacomole was very tasty.
  27. She recommended the Tuna and Seabass which were both very tasty.
  28. the weekend brunch is quite amazing as well - eggs with mexican food, such an interesting combination and made so well!
  29. For a great Mexican food experience, try El Bocadito in the Lower East Side - it's cheap and the food is incredible (and authentic) -- also, the service is great there.
  30. couldn't believe how much our bill ended up being with such mediocre food!
  31. Again, our waitress came by to assert that she had HEARD me order the steak tacos (I haven't eaten red meat or poultry for 17 years).
  32. We highly recommend the prickly pear margarita and the chicken quesadillas (LOTS of marinated chicken).
  33. The food overall was good, but salty and a bit greasy.
  34. This place was great, we had appetizers & main dishes.
  35. The cactus margaritas are very good, as is the guacamole, but for people who enjoy good mexican food, there are much better places in NYC.
  36. And the margaritas were tasty as well.
  37. The food tasted fresh, and the server gave us wonderful suggestions.
  38. dependable stand-by, this place offers good, clean, fresh food, but is hardly authentic.
  39. At the end of the meal, we were brought coffee full of grounds and 'floating' crumbs and something the manager described as 'curdled heavy whipping cream' to lighten it with.
  40. Our food was cold (not to mention mediocre at best), and the complimentary drinks that are part of the meal were added to our check along with the appeziter that we never got.
  41. But our last Dos Caminos meal started off with dirty water glasses and plates (guac & salsa bits) followed by a dirty cocktail glass - salsa mimosa anyone?
  42. The food is good, but $25 for some shrimp and rice, and another $22 for pork and some tortillas is ridiculous.
  43. The portions were good, and the chopped salad with roasted corn, squash blossoms quesadilla, and sea bass were all heavenly.
  44. love Mexican food.
  45. However, the spicy guacamole made right at your table, prickly pear margarita, extensive tequila list, and mariscos tacos are all excellent options!
  46. Rest of my parties dishes were equally bad if not worse.
  47. The chips and salsa are great- I'm not a guac fan but those who sprung for it enjoyed.
  48. Both times the food was amazing and margaritas strong!
  49. The food is terrible.
  50. don't mind spending a lot of money if the food is amazing but my group was very disappointed.
  51. really liked the rice that came with his meal.
  52. The guac of course is amazing and they REALLY dont kid around about their spicy level guac.
  53. Chicken Enchilladas was awesome, chicken was well cooked.
  54. My date got the shrimp quesadilla that would have been decent they left off that awful sauce and if the shrimp wasn't so tough.

  4. You have to be a poor consumer to waste your time here with all of the wonderful options New York City has to offer.
  5. However, the spicy guacamole made right at your table, prickly pear margarita, extensive tequila list, and mariscos tacos are all excellent options!
  6. Great ambiance, great staff, great location, great presentation and selection and most of all, everything tasted wonderful!

  1. Yet another great Steve Hanson restaurant in Soho.
  2. The guacamole was good but then again its so simple to make you cant go wrong with that at any other mexican place.

  1. Great food & drinks, but had very bad server
  2. Probably the worst service I ever experienced in this city.
  3. The food tasted fresh, and the server gave us wonderful suggestions.
  4. The service was good, but they need more bartenders to cope with a full house.
  5. For a great Mexican food experience, try El Bocadito in the Lower East Side - it's cheap and the food is incredible (and authentic) -- also, the service is great there.
  6. We were served warm beer and when we asked for cold ones the waitress acted like we were prudes.
  7. our waitress wasn't friendly and service was slow.
  8. The waitress was also very good, Nice atmosphere, candles made a good ambiance.
  9. The server was not very friendly and seemed very pressured to put our order into the kitchen very shortlyl after we were seated.
  10. But overall, would recommend this cool place, just not that server!
  11. My friend had the snapper, upon recommendations of the rude waitress, which was bland and did not look appetizing.
  12. Great ambiance, great staff, great location, great presentation and selection and most of all, everything tasted wonderful!
  13. The hostess was rude, they need to get someone more friendly at the entrance.
  14. i'll start with such: i found the service to be some of the best in SoHo-the staff was polite, relaxed, and not as condescending as other neighboring restrs.
  15. The waiter was very helpful and attentive.
  16. Once seated, service was slow.
  17. Despite the awesome waiter my dining experience was a WASTE OF TIME and $.
  18. Nice breezes and nice service
  19. The guacamole is everything people say -- excellent.
  20. Usually there is a trade-off when you pay high prices for so-so food (i.e. atttentive service, great atmosphere, etc).
  21. But besides all that, the food was delicous, the staff are friendly and professional and the margarita's are to die for!
  22. The cactus margaritas are very good, as is the guacamole, but for people who enjoy good mexican food, there are much better places in NYC.
  23. The crowd and the service were the best two things I can say about our dining experience.
  24. There was a HUGE group of people in the restaurant, and unfortunately they were understaffed.
  25. She checked on the status of our guests periodically never being rude or impatient about it.
  26. watched the couple next to me do lines of coke on the table in full view of the staff.
  27. The wait staff is professional & always quick to offer a tip.
  28. Not to mention leaving a tip for a rude, lazy, unattractive waitress.
  29. If you feel that the blatantly careless service and disgergard for cleanliness standards would detract from your enjoyment of the fabulous food, avoid this place.
  30. At the end of the meal, we were brought coffee full of grounds and 'floating' crumbs and something the manager described as 'curdled heavy whipping cream' to lighten it with.
  31. Again, our waitress came by to assert that she had HEARD me order the steak tacos (I haven't eaten red meat or poultry for 17 years).
  32. We had a big group and some people paid in cash and other by credit card, yet when the bill came, they charged those 10 people paying with credit card an extra $20 or so each.
  33. the bartenders were friendly.
  34. Server was excellent but was bogged down with a large party with a demanding hostess, people kept arriving late, later and still arriving while others were eating.
  35. Our waitress was nice, but nowhere to be found.
  36. The menu has changed, the crowd seems better, and the service is pretty good.
  37. Wandered in around 5pm on a Saturday night with no reservation, the hostess was very friendly and gave us a table but informed us that we had to be gone by 7pm because they were booked solid.

Wasn't impressed.

by TardyKat

We opted for the restaurant week menu. The flavors were good but I thought the grilled hanger skirt steak was rubbery and it tasted weird. We ordered hot apple cider and hot Mexican chocolate. I don't know if I would go back for the a la carte, I wasn't very impressed.

Amazing mexican

by melindakaplan12

My favorite mexican restaurant in the city. The fresh guacamole is made right at the table. It goes great with their fantastic yummy drinks. The outdoors is beautiful and feels very roomy. Service is great and so is the atmosphere.

Our waitress was very sweet and helpful.

Killer Mexican Food, Good Drinks, GUACAMOLE

by ahcurtis

You have to start with the food & menu when talking at DC Soho. It's the central part of the experience and doesn't disappoint. The guacamole, made fresh to order, is an absolute must and it exceeds expectations.

The rest of the menu has high quality Mexican style food and its worth sharing amongst people at your table.

The marg's are a must and the pitchers are re-filled quickly.

The wait staff is professional & always quick to offer a tip. The hosts have to deal with too many demanding people, but if you have a reservation or if you are polite it's not an issue. I would recommend making a reservation or calling ahead.

  • Pros: Guac, Food, Service, Atmosphere, Drinks
  • Cons: Tad expensive, Big Waits (Make a Reserv)

Margs and Guac is all they have to offer.

by MLevey

I have come here a few times for drinks and guac but that is all I will be ordering after actually coming here on a date. The server was in his own world, the food came out half cooked and the manager had the nerve to argue about not taking it off the bill.

Don't eat here, just order a few drinks at the bar. That's it!
