Editorial Review for Black Bear Lodge – by Lisa Marie Rovito

The Scene
Don't ask why a ski-motif lodge should plunk down in Gramercy. Just give thanks for the general campiness of it all, from the rinky-dink fireplace in back to the picnic tables and painted signs for boat rentals and bait. Nothing much is authentic--the antler chandeliers look mass-produced--but drinks are cheap, TVs abound and at least it's something different. Ten beers served in chilled mugs range from PBR to Black Bear Stout and, when the mood strikes, a Jager shot-machine is willing.

The Draw
To come to the lodge and not coax a dollar into the Big Buck Hunter video game is grounds for removal. It's fun, addictive, and completely un-P.C. Manhandle the orange plastic rifle for five rounds of deer hunting--a real head on the back wall serves as inspiration. While the frozen margaritas do nothing for your aim, devotees swear it's better than 60 minutes with their shrink.

I have only been to the Black Bear Lodge once. That one time was last night, but I'm pretty sure it was the greatest night of my life. Where else in New York City can you find a place that is decorated like a hunting lodge and serves buckets of Natural Lights? Also, the chicks there were smokin' hot. I have only two minor criticisms of the place: 1. The buckets of Naturals might be too good a deal, and 2. My friend John scooped this girl with whom I had initiatiated conversation. Other than those minor grievances, Black Bear Lodge gets 5 stars.

My friends and I stoppped by Black Bear Lodge last night on a whim and loved it! The lodge theme was something different than all the other bars we usually frequent, and it was filled with a fun, unpretentious crowd of mainly twentysomethings. Drinks are also cheap...will definitely return!

Pros: Nice atmosphere, cheap drinks
