VEGETARIAN FOOD WITH A FRENCH MEDITERRANEAN FLAIR

Try Counter's Panini with Walnut Lentil Pate (customers have confessed about dreaming about) and cauliflower prepared risotto-style that is rumored to be an aphrodisiac.

THE EPICENTER OF ORGANIC COCKTAILS

According to THE NEW YORK TIMES, Counter is the "epicenter of organic cocktails" in New York. Writer Jonathan Miles praised the "Dirtiest Martini" in particular - one of COUNTER's many humorously-named cocktails such as the "Angry Lesbian."

The Scene
Set in a pleasant white room with quasi-retro aqua and pink accents, fronted by a handsome, circular wine bar, Counter has a friendly air of cleanliness and competence. The staff are well-trained, eager to please--occasionally to the point of intrusive doting--and opinionated about the food and drink they serve.

The Food
An all-vegetarian take on mostly traditional Southern cuisine, with a few Asian and other flavors thrown in. Standouts among the Southern fare include a terrific lentil-based version of meat loaf with savory mashed potatoes, an excellent smoked-tofu po' boy and a couple of different burgers. A towering vegetable Napoleon with crisp polenta and cilantro pesto is also tasty, as are savory crepes filled with vegetables and smoked tofu, in potent orange-ginger sauce. Desserts, including a dry poppy seed cake and a Key lime pie that tastes of soy, are the only disappointments.

Firstly, i should say i really like this restaurant. I am a veggie, lacto ovo not vegn, but have always loved Counter since it opened. Now, however, the Chef has left and a new one is in place and the food last time we went (2 weeks ago) was just way below par. Everything seemed to have changed. We hope it is just the transition and Counter finds its way back but if you have been recently and it has been your first time; don't judge it on that soley. We hope the owners read these reviews and know they have a fan base but they need to get back to its original good form!

really ordinary food and way overpriced. probably the worst value meal i've had in the last year. you can get a better vege dish in a non vegetarian restaurant..

I loved the cauliflower risotto and I don't even like cauliflower that much. The bar gal, Tanya was knowledgable and funny and the drinks hhad such clever names:). Our waitress was very efficient. There was so much food and all of it good but I had room for the great chocolate dessert. With a resturant like Counter, who needs meat?
