“Our orders were very slow to come to the table, which would have been perfectly acceptable given the size of our party and the Sunday brunch rush, but the waitress also made a mistake with one of the orders and said the kitchen would have to re-cook it.”
Joul is a Jewel!. I love having a great neighborhood French Bistro just around the corner. The mussels and mushroom ravioli are my personal favorites and the staff is very warm and attentive.
Excellent food. Went there with a party of four. We were all very pleased with the quality of food. In New York there are so many restaurants to try that it takes excellent food and service for me to want to go back a second time. This restaurant makes me want to come back. The salads / apps were excellent. My entree was really outstanding. Had the sole and rice just prepared to perfection. Desert for me was rice pudding with bluberries and carmel. One of the best I ever had. Prices are also reasonable. Really enjoyed it.
First French dining experience!!!ok.
This was my first French dining experience in the city. I wanted to try a restaurant from the citysearch list and my friend wanted to try a french restaurant. I choose this place because the online menu looked good.
Tables are roomed very close together, so close that my seat kept getting bumped by the person behind me. Food was pretty good (good in the sense that I already knew that I wanted to come back) and service okay.
Charming & delicious!. Met a friend here recently because he had a City Shuffle Diner's Deck coupon. What a delightful place to check out! For starters, we split the savory white sausage/apple salad appetizer. I enjoyed the free range chicken for my dinner, it was flavored nicely & perfectly cooked, as was the accompanying asparagus & fettuccine - delicious! The wine was good, the service warm & accommodating, the ambiance charming. Tucked away on First Avenue like a well-kept secret (especially from those who don't live nearby & have to schlep from the Lex subway like me), this place is worth returning to!
BEST undiscovered French bistro in Manhattan. Cafe Joul is truly a remarkable restaurant. This French bistro has everything going for it. This is a small neighborhood place, well known locally for its ambiance and great food. Picture the interior of Balthazar but smaller, charming and romantic. The food is really really good - typical bistro but outstanding in taste and presentation. The owner/chef is always on the ball and really delivers a superb meal. The duck main course is excellent as is the chicken, accompanied by lemon fettucini and grilled leeks. Also, the nightly specials can't be beat. Weekend brunch is also a favorite - the place gets filled up pretty quickly on a Sunday morning! Heidi, the manager, is always available and makes sure that everyone is comfortably taken care of. The small bar exudes charm and can be used to dine at as well. The atmosphere can be quite romantic with dimmed lighting, period furnishings, and walls filled with original artwork. All in all, Cafe Joul is a neighborhood gem, good for a casual meal or for a special night out as well. It is worth a trip from anywhere in the city.
Sensational authentic Fresh Food !.
This is the "perfect "restaurant for anyone wanting a wonderful dining experience. The soup, salads mussels , salmon , steak , vegatables , deserts etc. are all prepared with top quality ingredients. I'm a regular and always take my friends when visiting from Eurpoe. Each customer is treated with respect, warmth and great service.
After trying Cafe Joul Im sure you be dining there on a weekly basis.
Fantastic Gem of a Bistro. In a neighborhood that otherwise lacks luster on the dining front, Cafe Joul is a brilliant jewel. Zero pretension, the focus here is the FOOD. It's very good, in fact suprisingly good given the casual feel of the downtownish decor. No vertical dishes here or flavored foams, just darn good basic bistro fare that seems to be more and more difficult to find these days. Service is always pleasant with a warm welcome on each and every visit. This is our go-to place when we have visitors who always request a return visit before their departure. Try the fish specials, the mussels, goat cheese pizza with bibb or my favorite the fish cassoulet (call first to reserve one- they always run out.) Our friends rave about the burger. Only complaint is that they don't take reservations of tables fewer than five after 8pm or so. It's always busy, but we find the wait time to be brief most evenings and worth it!
Great food in a relaxed atmosphere for a reasonable price. Cafe Joul is my go-to restaurant in my mid-town east side neighborhood. My favorite dishes are The French Onion Soup (the best in Manhattan), the duck (wonderful), and the flourless chocolate cake (out of this world). In fact, all the food is really great. The restaurant is French, but the atmosphere is relaxed. As important, the prices are quite reasonable. I highly recommend this gem.
What a cute place!. I went there with friends last week, and I had such a relaxing lunch! The space itself is quiet and cozy - just like a little French bistro! All of the dishes we ordered were superb - the burger was delicious, and the mussels were just right! We had the roasted eggplant soup du jour to start, and it was one of the best soups I have ever eaten! On top of that, we were well-taken care of by our hostess and waitress, despite the fact that she was the only one there at the time. The first time I went, for dinner, the whole staff took care of us in a friendly and down-to-earth manner. It couldn't be a better place to eat!
