What People Are Saying About Grand Sichuan Intl Eastern Icn

In Short – This Chinese restaurant has proven so popular, it's spawned multiple outposts, this one in east midtown. Decor varies from location to location, with photos of Mao Tse-Tung making occasional appearances. Menus also vary, though most break down into Sichuan, Hunan, and "American Chinese Food" sections. Sichuan should be the main draw, obviously, with basics like smoked tea duck and double cooked pork available alongside more intriguing dishes like sliced conch and "Bad Smell Bean Curd."

My friends and I went to the Grand Sichuan Eastern on St. Marks last Friday. There were 10 of us and we didn't make reservation. The waiter ( or he is the store manager?) told us we have to wait for around 35 mins. So we waited.....and during our waiting we constantly asked him if any table is available soon. He told us he will give us one of the table soon. After 1 hour waiting....we asked again.....then he started to say that there is no table for us and we didn't have reservation.
I was furious!!!!
We knew we didn't have reservation and that's why we asked. I said, if there is no chance we will have a table, why didn't you just tell us? Then we will just leave!!!!
It's just not right to do business like that. He tried to keep us there waiting because he is afraid if the people reserve for the table didn't show up, then he can give that table for us and he won't loose the chance of making money....So we stood there for 1 hour and get this???
I have been to that restaurant for many times. The food is not that good. Just sometimes I crave for Sichuan food so I would go there. With an attitude like that, and the food is not even good....I strongly recommend people not to go there at all !!!!

There are several Grand Sichuan Easterns...I've tried Chelsea and the one on 2nd Ave@55th. Can't say much about the one on St. Marks Place as I have not been there yet.
I agree the one in Chelsea has better atmosphere and seems more on top of it, but the food is consistently comparable and fresh at both locations. The service is usally brisk and a bit abrupt, but most Asians focus on the food preparation anyways. Being one, I recommend both the Chelsea and 2nd Ave. restaurants.
The 2nd Avenue spot is smaller and has a neighborhood feel. I recommend going during off-peak hours...early lunch or early dinner hours.
They do it SPICY...but you can ask for less spicy. In most cases, it still comes to your table somewhat spicy...so be prepared....enjoy!
- Pros: delicious and authentic sichuan, neighborhood feel, comfortable
- Cons: brisk, abrupt service, not a place for relaxing or intimate conversations
Best Sichuan Style Chinese Food in NY

Whoever says their food is not good does not understand chinese food, I am a chinse who loves chinese food, so I can say that with some credit. This restaurant has the best chinese food, and if you really want to try it, go straight to their authentic chinese food session, because that is where all the juice is. If you want to stick to Brocolli-beef-orange-chicken sort of chinese food and still trying to tell if that is good or bad, you are trying too hard.
