Under the Sea
Opened in May 2003, the renovated Milstein Family Hall of Ocean Life is an interactive and multi-sensory experience that appeals to adults and kids of all attention spans. The soaring skylight is artificially lit a deep shimmering blue to simulate an underwater environment, but the first--and pretty much only--thing you'll see as you enter the spacious hall is the exhibit's piece de resistance: a legendary 94-foot blue whale suspended from the ceiling.
School of Fish
Most of the mezzanine level is devoted to exploring different underwater ecosystems, as depicted in well-conceived displays. Giant plasma screens roll the kind of mesmerizing footage you'd find on the Discovery channel--coral reefs bursting with color, penguins waddling, odd-looking fish lurking in dark ocean depths. A 150-million-year-old slab of sea floor reveals a fossil of one of the Earth's first underwater creatures, a Mesolimulus Walchi (a.k.a. a horseshoe crab).

Insider Tips
On the lower level, you'll find dioramas of giant polar bears, frolicking seals and the mythical giant squid, as well as an open-space theater with an 18' by 8' screen recreating the evolution of the Earth's oceans.
