Editorial Review for Patriot Saloon – by Kara Zuaro
The Scene
The same folks who opened Village Underground are now serving up $5.50 pitchers of Pabst, well drinks for $2.75 and burgers for $1 (including tax)--and ritzy Tribeca hasn't seen such a square deal since the Teddy Roosevelt administration. Country classics blast from the jukebox and an American flag adds to the decor, which includes an extensive collection of neon beer signs and a giant taxidermic crocodile. Despite the accoutrements, the vibe at this cavernous tavern is more post-frat than patriotic.
The Draw
Friday and Saturday nights reign in a rowdy crowd: Ladies dance on the bar, and drink buy-backs are distributed justly to all. The weeknight scene is slightly dreary, as pretty midriff-baring bartenders attend to older solo drinkers, battered and broken by the daily grind. Fortunately, the bras and neckties that hang haphazardly from the ceiling assure that the weekend crowd will bring back more upbeat debauchery.

What a dive bar should be. I have no idea how a genuinely fun place like the Patriot is able to survive in the heart of yuppified, soulless Tribeca but I sure am glad it does. The whole staff is accomodating - the bartenders are all very charming and engaging and even the bouncers are friendlier than most. The two-level bar usually isn't too packed as I've been going there for a good while now and have rarely had trouble getting a drink. Speaking of which, The Patriot offers some of the cheapest beer on the island of Manhattan - $2 PBR in the can as well as very reasonable $3 and $4 pints for premium domestic and imported brews on tap, respectively. The crowd is usually raucuous but fun - not pretentious or overrun by idiotic meatheads and valley girls, which is always a plus. There's also a dartboard (albeit with awful plastic darts - bring your own) and a pool table which every good dive is required to have. The downstairs jukebox leaves a bit to be desired as it's filled with nothing but country music and the men's bathrooms on both levels (especially the bottom one) are horror shows but it's a very small price to pay for the great experience this place provides.
Pros: Price, Atmosphere, Service, Staff
Cons: Jukebox, Little Else
