Editorial Review for Kiwi – by Lynn Suhrie
In Short
The citrus-colored store resembles the ultimate walk-in closet: Suspended racks of bright clothing and decorative mirrors flank each wall, jewelry sparkles behind glass cases, and fashion magazines from the 1950s to date are artfully scattered. Classic shapes get a twist under designer and co-owner Christine Alcalay's eye, especially through details like intricate beading, lace patterning and shells incorporated into the clothes. Select pieces from Sanctuary clothing are also sold here, with new choices arriving monthly.

I've visited this shop several times and have bought some wonderful, handmade, and truly unique items; some of my favorite things in my closet come from Kiwi. The clothes are beautiful, colorful and funky. The staff is friendly, but sometimes to a fault. They are eager to help you and gush over your clothing picks in a way that feels inauthentic, sounds saccharine, and leaves you wondering if you could possibly look that GOOD! Each time I go, the staff displays a hovering attentiveness that makes me feel uncomfortable. I hate overly solicitious service and often wish they would let me pick out my own clothes, unless I ask for help! If they addressed this one issue, I would return more often, as the clothes really are terrific and reasonably priced.
Pros: choices, styles, good fits
Cons: poor staff boundaries

I disagree that this store is particularly expensive; I have found many well-priced items (not bargains, mind you, but not offensively highly priced, like at many of the other stores around the 'hood). Christine Alcalay's own (beautiful) designs are priced high because they are made to order, but the other brands Kiwi carries are really quite reasonable; and the higher-cost items like cashmere sweaters are the same everywhere. The best part of the store is the brilliant editorial eye that oversees all purchases; the shop really has a clear design aesthetic even though it carries many different brands.
Pros: Very attentive, smart staff; not all Velvet and usual brands
