Named for an area in London's East End, this well-liked Indian spot in the East Village does excellent Punjabi-by-way-of-the-UK curries. Almost every dish--including creamy korma, peppery balti, tangy, tomatoey jalfrzi, or crowd-pleasing tikka masala--can be prepared with vegetables, paneer (cheese), tofu, goat, lamb, chicken, shrimp or fish. Hawkers don't stand outside of Brick Lane offering half-off starters or live sitar music like at other nearby Indian restaurants, because they don't have to: this restaurant's food is the real thing.

I have ordered from here before as the curries remind me of being back in England, the food is good. However, I have just waited almost 2 hours for my food. I called after 40 minutes of waiting and was told by a very polite woman that it was 10 minutes away, I called again 20 minutes later to be told that the delivery guy was in our area and our delivery was next, that the delivery guy did not speak any English! Another 20 minutes went by, another phone call to be told she was sorry and it would literally be 2 minutes! I told her I was not going to pay if the food was cold. When we finally got the food, another 10 minutes after my last call, it was lukewarm, the breads were stone cold! I asked the delivery man how come it took so long, he said it was the kitchen, "very busy"! I just feel that people should know this, don't order for delivery it's just not worth the wait, also really we were lied to by the lady on the phone! I won't be ordering from them again and suggest you don't too!

I'm kinda weak, so super spicy food isn't for me. Luckily, Brick Lane has a large selection of really tasty, yet mild dishes. The dopiaza (I usually do chicken) is to die for, as well as the butter masala, korma, and goan curry. Gotta get the bombay aloo, aloo gobi or sag aloo as a side. And I love their chapatis. We've always gone early in the evening, because we know it gets crazy busy later on. The staff is attentive and the decor is pleasant.
