Editorial Review for Soul Spot Restaurant – by Ben Williams

The Scene
There's little to visually distinguish Soul Spot from any number of hole-in-the-wall joints in New York, aside from its cleanliness. The small space has just enough room for three tables in front of the counter area, which displays most of the menu behind plexiglass; diners pick up their order from there, or take it to go.

The Food
The food, however, is a different story. The standard soul food menu is on offer, but the execution is anything but average and the servings are generous (each main course comes with two sides for less than $10). Chicken and dumplings practically melt together in a delicious, chewy mush. Salmon and catfish are crisp and flaky. Sides are excellent: Cinnamon-spiced yams taste like a dessert item, and collard greens are much fresher than usual. If you still have room, there's superb coconut lemon pie, peach cobbler and more.

i havent had a lot of soul food in my food experiences, but i do know what tastes good. and the soul spot's fare is exceptional. for nine dollars, i can have an amazing meal with some leftover for a nice midnite snack. they really pile it on. i wholly recommend all the food, theyre full of flavor and never disappoint. my favorites? j3rk(the regular word is detected as "inappropriate") chicken with fresh fried plaintains and mac&cheese. the decor is not much to look at, but for me, its all about the food and company.

Pros: full tummy of good food

One of mine and my husband's favorite places. Its the place we go to before we take a long trip out of the city and the first place we go when we get back home. The Best Meatloaf ever, take it with the mashed potatoes & corn and it is the perfect comfort food. Best enjoyed as take out or delivery, ambiance is lacking- its all function no form.

Pros: prices are great for the quality and the amount of food

Cons: all function not much form- but they do have a huge mirror.
