What may appear at first glance to be yet another expense account sushi restaurant is, in fact, one of the most interesting and idiosyncratic Japanese restaurants in the city -- and certainly the only one this far south. The specialties range from needlefish (one of the weirdest looking creatures on earth) to five different kinds of fish heads simmered delicately in dashi broth, to an otherworldly beef-heart yakitori.
BOYCOT ISE - Good food, but they discriminate!. The food here is good, but they have these lunch specials A & B, written in Japanese on the menu, that they will ONLY serve to Japanese people. I've tried to order these specials on numerous occasions, and am always told they're "sold out," even though it was only noon. They said come back before 12, which i did, same story, sold out. Meanwhile, i see these japanese business all chowing down on these specials. I'm asian to boot, just not japanese. BOYCOT THIS PLACE!
only decent downtown option. I have dined at Ise at least twice a month for 3+ years. As a fi-di resident, eating options are slim, but we are fortunate to have an authentic Japanese option. Never crowded, you can always count on being able to walk-in on any given night. The food is solid and include options imported from Tokyo itself (at a cost of course), but hey at least the option is there. Servers at times can be unattentive, certainly not from being overly busy, but sometimes this is a result of requests being lost in translation. Overall, they mean well, consistent with polite Japanese culture.
AWFUL takeout service. I work downtown and Ise is the only good place for takeout sushi. However, the woman at the register has to be the nastiest, meanest person in the ny restaurant industry. She's unpleasant and rude. I thought it was just me that got this vibe, but other people tell me the same thing. If you want decent sushi with a bad attitude, Ise is the place.
Best Sushi ever!. The fish is so very fresh, delivered everyday. Everything just melts in your mouth. Absolutely the best sushi/sashimi I've ever had. Every friend I've brought there agrees that the sushi is the best they've had too. For some reason though, take out is not as tasty as eating in. It's prepared differently. I'm spoiled now. I find eating sushi anywhere else has been a disappointment after this place!!
very disappointed. Waiters were not attentive. Food was bad not authentic japanese sushi.
